Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Sam Mitchell scored eight of his 17 points in a pivotal fourth-quarter run and the Minnesota Timberwolves contained Tim Duncan in a 95-89 victory over the struggling San Antonio Spurs.

Minnesota (8-2) won its fourth straight game and continued the best start in franchise history by beating San Antonio for the second time in three meetings. The teams meet again on April 14.

Minnesota's Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 11 rebounds. With the help of constant double-teams, he limited Duncan to 10 points and 12 rebounds. Duncan was scoreless in the second and third quarters.

David Robinson took advantage of the double-teams on Duncan and contributed 17 points and 17 rebounds. But neither of the "Twin Towers" could slow the Wolves early in the final period.

"We just tried to trap him a lot," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Our thinking was if we could limit the shots that Duncan and Robinson got, that we'd be in good shape. When you can limit Duncan and Robinson to 10 and nine shots, you should win the game."

"It's only Tim's second year in the league and he's kind of struggling with the double-teams," Spurs forward Sean Elliott said.

The Spurs took a 66-65 lead into the fourth quarter but went scoreless for the first 4 1/2 minutes. Mitchell made a pair of free throws and Tom Hammonds scored in the lane before Mitchell hit two straight jumpers for a 73-66 lead with 8:18 remaining.

San Antonio's Jerome Kersey ended the drought with 7:32 to go, but Joe Smith had a lay-in, Bobby Jackson made a steal and layup and Mitchell sank a 12-footer to cap a 14-2 burst at 79-68 with 6:13 remaining.

"I've been playing up and down. I don't feel like I've been playing that great," Mitchell said. "I have had some good games now and then."

The Spurs closed to 85-81 on a 3-pointer by Elliott with 1:47 to play, but reserve swingman Malik Sealy scored seven of his 14 points down the stretch to seal it.

Smith overcame a blow to the chin and had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves, who shot 43 percent (39-of-90) from the field and forced 22 turnovers. Minnesota blocked 10 shots, including three each by Garnett and Dean Garrett.

"Steph, K.G. and Joe Smith are playing great," Mitchell said. "The nights that they don't have it going, we guys have been coming off the bench and playing well."

"Minnesota's athletic ability gives everybody problems, not just us," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Minnesota is just very athletic and aggressive."

Avery Johnson scored a season-high 20 points and Mario Elie added 19 for the Spurs, who shot 41 percent (36-of-87) and held a 46-42 rebounding edge. Duncan committed eight turnovers and Robinson six.

"Eleven games into the season, I would have never thought we'd be where we are now," popovich said. "I would have never thought in my wildest dreams that we'd be 5-6."

Both teams began cold and the first quarter ended in a 20-20 tie as Duncan scored eight points. He did not score again until making a pair of free throws with 25 seconds to play.

Minnesota held a 41-40 halftime lead but Elie scored 13 points in the third quarter to give San Antonio a one-point advantage.
