Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- An ailing Jason Kidd continued his monopoly on triple-doubles with his third of the season as the Phoenix Suns maintained their dominance of the Dallas Mavericks with a 101-83 rout.

Kidd, a former Maverick, collected 17 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for his 22nd career triple-double. Tonight's effort moved the fourth-year guard past Clyde Drexler and Michael Ray Richardson into sixth place on the all-time list, although triple-doubles did not become an official statistic until the 1990s.

Kidd is the only player to record a triple-double this season. Last season, he had four, including two against Dallas. He has nine triple-doubles for Phoenix after being acquired the day after Christmas in 1996.

"I thought I was going to pass out," said Kidd. "I have had this bad cold for a couple of days. Today, my chest was burning."

Nonetheless, his 22 triple-doubles trail only Detroit's Grant Hill (28) among active players. Kidd still has a long way to catch another versatile point guard, former Los Angeles Lakers superstar Magic Johnson, who had 138.

"I'm not going to do it every night," Kidd said. "I'm trying to help my teammates any way I can. Anything to get easy baskets. When I get rebounds it starts the fast break and causes a lot of havoc."

"It is a team deal," added Suns coach Danny Ainge. "Guys are boxing out and that gets Jason a lot of rebounds. Guys are making shots and that gets him assists. Triple-doubles are sometimes an indication that teams are playing very well."

Rex Chapman scored 18 points and Danny Manning added 17 for Phoenix, which has won the last seven meetings with Dallas. The Suns have taken 24 of the last 26 matchups and are 19-2 in the last 21 meetings in Phoenix.

"I thought we played a very good game tonight," said Ainge. "I thought Jason Kidd was spectacular. Rex Chapman gave us a huge lift, you can see what a difference it makes when he plays up to his capabilities."

Former Suns Cedric Ceballos and Michael Finley led Dallas with 21 and 17 points, respectively.

The Suns took control from the outset and never let Dallas into the game. Chapman had five points and Kidd four as Phoenix made its first five shots and raced to a 12-2 lead.

The lead was 27-20 just over two minutes into the second quarter when Phoenix ran off 11 straight points. Rookie Pat Garrit had four points during the run, capping it with a 13-footer with 6:48 to go.

Ceballos had 16 points in the first half for Dallas, which trailed 49-41 at intermission. The Mavericks shot 37 percent (17-of-46) over the first 24 minutes.

"We are really not sorry about the losses and what our record is because we see that we are shooting a terrible percentage," Ceballos said. "We have not been hitting shots that we normally hit. That was the case tonight as our shots were not going down."

Consecutive layups by Ceballos opened the third quarter and got Dallas within 49-45. But Kidd's 3-pointer with 7:14 left capped a 10-2 run and pushed the lead back to 12.

Chapman and Kidd, the Suns starting backcourt, combined to shoot 13-of-23. Manning was 7-of-8 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists in 22 minutes off the bench.

"Tonight we wanted to come out and get a game at home because we have been struggling here," Manning said. "I think we were a little more focused and we had a lot of energy. Another key was that we got a lot of transition baskets."

Tonight marked the return of point guard Steve Nash, who played his first two seasons with the Suns before being dealt to Dallas in a draft-day trade. Nash, also bothered by the flu, was held to one point and four assists in 23 minutes.

"Nash had the flu so he could not do much," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson.
