Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone collected 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Utah Jazz posted their 19th straight home victory over the winless Los Angeles Clippers, 104-89.

The Jazz are 15-0 against the Clippers since moving into the Delta Center and have not lost a home game to Los Angeles since April 18, 1989.

Shandon Anderson scored 17 points and Jeff Hornacek added 14 for Utah, which recorded its third straight victory after its lone setback of the season at Seattle on Tuesday. The Jazz (9-1) maintained a one-game lead over Minnesota for the best record in the Western Conference.

"We were a little quick with some of our shots early in the game and that gave them a chance to get out on us a bit," said Hornacek. "But we ended the first with a five-point lead. We built it up from there and won by 13 points. What do you expect, a 20-point win every night?"

Maurice Taylor and James Robinson scored 17 points apiece for Los Angeles, which fell to 0-8. The Clippers still have a way to go to eclipse the worst start in franchise history. They began the 1994-95 season with 16 losses.

"We had our moments in the first half," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "But we couldn't sustain it for a full 48 minutes. I mean, we score only 13 points in the third quarter and shoot poorly from the field. You can't shoot (poorly) against the Utah Jazz and expect to win."

Clippers center Michael Olowokandi, the top pick in the 1998 draft, started after undergoing an MRI today. He had six points and six rebounds in 27 minutes after the test revealed no damage to his swollen right knee.

John Stockton had 11 points, six rebounds and eight assists in only 18 minutes for the Jazz, who have won four of the last five meetings with the Clippers.

"We need different heroes in different games," said Stockton. "I think Shandon was super tonight, Karl as always and Horny took control. It's the sign of a budding team. We've still got a ways to go but it's nice when different guys step up on different nights."

Adam Keefe scored 10 points off the bench for the Jazz, who made half of their 74 shots and held a 42-38 advantage on the boards.

Lamond Murray collected 12 points for the Clippers, who shot 38 percent (30-of-79) and committed 17 turnovers.

Taylor drained a five-foot jumper in the lane to tie the game at 37-37 with 6:18 left in the first half, before the Jazz took control.

Malone capped a 14-2 run with a thunderous dunk with 4:13 remaining in the half, giving Utah a 51-39 bulge.

"They missed some shots at the beginning of the second half," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "I don't know if it was our defense but I never felt we had a good enough feel that we were clamping down on them and they were just missing missing shots."

Howard Eisley's driving layup with 3:52 to play gave the Jazz their biggest lead, 95-75.
