Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Coming off the worst offensive performance in franchise history, the Chicago Bulls ended their longest losing streak in 13 years with a 77-68 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Bulls shot just 34 percent (24-for-70) in Sunday's 79-63 loss at New York. It matched the lowest total in club annals and gave them a seven-game losing streak for the first time since February 2-17, 1986.

"We sure need that," said Chocago coach Tim Floyd. "I was really happy for the guys. I thought it was the best energy we've approached a first half with. It was a real good win for us. Tonight was probably the best job we've done this year penetrating and kicking it out."

Mark Bryant scored 16 points and eight rebounds and Toni Kukoc added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Chicago (2-8), which avoided its worst start since the 1978-79 season. The Bulls shot a respectable 44 percent (31-for-71) from the floor and were helped by Atlanta's worst offensive showing of the season.

"Who knows? Maybe we'll learn a lesson. Maybe it'll be good for us," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "I just didn't see the energy, the fire. If you want to call that falling apart, then fine."

Atlanta shot just 31 percent (24-of-77) and has lost consecutive home games after opening with three wins. The Hawks were without All-Star guard Steve Smith, who went on the injured list with a sprained knee suffered in Saturday's 76-69 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

"Obviously they missed Smith," Floyd said.

Without Smith -- who had led the team in scoring in every game -- Alan Henderson recorded 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Hawks. Grant Long had 13 points off the bench for the Hawks, who ended the third period with a 15-6 run to close to 62-52.

Randy Brown scored 11 points and backcourt partner Ron Harper added 10 for Chicago, which won for the first time in three meetings with Atlanta this season.

"A sigh of relief to finally know what it feels like to win again," Brown said. "It's the first time we played four quarters. We wanted to be aggressive on defense and without Steve Smith we wanted to make it tough for them to score. We started moving the ball and trusting each other. Everybody got invloved."

The Bulls opened a 15-5 lead when Kukoc made a 3-pointer with 6:51 remaining. In the first quarter, Kukoc had nine points, making 4-of-4 shots from the floor, as Chicago held a 29-14 lead.

Chicago maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter and built it as large as 37-16 when Bryant made a 12-footer with 8:21 to play. Atlanta cut the margin to 45-34 with 2:07 left when Blaylock hit a 3-pointer from the left sideline. Brent Barry answered with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer and the Bulls held a 52-37 lead at the break.

The Hawks failed to cut the lead under 10 until rookie Roshown McLeod sank a 3-pointer from the right sideline to make it 75-68 with 1:26 left.

After Dickey Simpkins missed a layup Atlanta had a chance to again cut the margin but McLeod's jumper from the left wing hit the front of the rim with 56 seconds left.
