Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Bimbo Coles and John Starks combined for 18 points in the fourth quarter and each made free throws down the stretch as the Golden State Warriors kept the Los Angeles Clippers winless with a 94-89 victory.

After Lamond Murray's free throw gave the Clippers a 87-83 advantage with 2:43 remaining, Coles drilled consecutive jumpers to bring Golden State even with 1:33 to play.

Starks made two free throws with 56 seconds left, putting the Warriors ahead for good, 89-87. Murray missed two shots before Coles converted a pair from the foul line to give Golden State a four-point lead with 18 seconds to go.

James Robinson made a layup to halve the deficit, but Coles hit two more free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the win.

Starks finished with 18 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, while Coles scored 15 points. Starks scored 10 points in the final 12 minutes and Coles had eight.

"I was trying to be aggressive taking the ball to the rack, making plays and getting fouled," Starks said.

Golden State has won five of its last six games after an 0-5 start. Last season, the Warriors did not record their fifth win until the 21st game.

Murray scored 30 points and Maurice Taylor added 23 and 11 rebounds for Los Angeles (0-9). The Clippers still have a way to go to eclipse the worst start in franchise history. They began the 1994-95 season with 16 losses.

It was close throughout the first half and the Clippers took a 41-40 lead with 4:37 to play before intermission after Taylor hit a 19-foot jumper. But the Warriors closed the half on a 10-2 spurt, taking a 51-43 advantage at intermission. Donyell Marshall, who finished with 13 rebounds and nine assists, had five points in the surge.

The Warriors still held a 64-58 advantage with 4 1/2 minutes left in third quarter. But Murray drained a 22-foot jumper, fueling a 10-2 burst to close the period that gave the Clippers a 68-66 lead.

Golden State scored the first nine points of the contest. But the Clippers answered with 14-2 surge, keyed by 10 points from Taylor.

Murray and Taylor took half of the Clippers' shots. Murray went 12-of-22 and Taylor hit 11-of-22 shots for Los Angeles, which shot 46 percent (36-of-78).

Starks connected on 7-of-15 shots for the Warriors, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) and held a 45-32 rebounding edge. Chris Mills contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Golden State.

"We were all over the boards. We have played with more confidence, winning four of our last five games," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "That has given us the confidence to execute."
