Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Rik Smits scored six of his 22 points in the decisive first quarter as the Indiana Pacers built a 22-point lead and cruised to a 104-84 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Chris Mullin had seven points and Dale Davis and Jalen Rose six apiece as Indiana took control early. The Pacers, who improved to 4-1 at home, made 13-of-20 shots in the opening period and used a 29-8 burst to close the quarter.

Smits, who has struggled offensively early this season, was 11-of-18 from the field and tied a season high with eight rebounds. He had combined for 22 points in his previous three games.

"Rik played well, it's good to have him back," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. "I thought our starting unit set the tempo and defended well. The first quarter was excellent."

Rookie Vince Carter established season highs with 28 points and 10 rebounds for Toronto, which has lost its last two games by a combined 46 points after opening the season 3-5.

"I'm learning a lot fast but it does not matter if I contribute 50 points a game, we need to win," Carter said. "I'm proud of the game I played tonight, and will continue to learn fast to help the team more."

The Raptors never got closer than 15 after the first quarter and fell to 1-6 on the road.

"The Pacers are the best team that we've played this year," said Toronto forward Charles Oakley. "The Pacers, with their depth, are a good team. We let them get off to too big a lead early and it was tough to come back."

Rose finished with a season-high 16 points and Travis Best added 10, both off the bench. The Pacers' lead was so comfortable that nine players recorded at least 20 minutes. Even first-round pick Al Harrington, who just turned 19, got into the action and scored his first professional points.

"We were having a good time out there tonight with everybody getting into the action," said Rose. "We jumped to an early lead, sustained it and were able to win."

Indiana scored the first five points of the contest but Alvin Williams answered with a pair of baskets for Toronto. With 2:14 gone, Reggie Miller buried a 16-footer that ignited a 25-6 burst.

Mullin followed Miller's jumper with one of his own and Davis had a dunk. Mullin made a layup with 6:23 left that put Indiana on top, 13-4. Tracy McGrady sank a 19-footer for Toronto but Davis made two free throws.

After Kevin Willis made two from the line, Miller drilled a 21-footer to ignite a 15-2 spurt that blew open the game. The 34 points in the first quarter were Indiana's most in any period this season.

The Pacers also committed a season-low nine turnovers and posted season bests in opponents' field goal percentage (31 percent) and 3-point field goal percentage (0-of-6).
