Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Playing at home for the first time in 18 days gave the Boston Celtics a jolt of energy they have lacked all season.

Rookie Paul Pierce scored 19 points and Antoine Walker and Dana Barros each added 17 as the Celtics ripped the Orlando Magic, 111-79, in their first game at the FleetCenter since February 6.

Pierce paced the Celtics in scoring for the third straight game, scoring 22 at Portland on Friday and 24 at Washington on Sunday.

"We got off to a good start tonight, really got off on the right track," Pierce said. "Tonight's a tremendous confidence booster for this team. If we have that kind of fire and confidence, then we can win any ballgame we play."

Boston matched its second-most lopsided victory since moving into this building in 1995. The Celtics crushed Vancouver 131-98, on January 31, 1996 and tonight's effort matches their 32-point victory against Golden State last season.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Boston, which returned from a 2-4 road trip. The 110 points represented a season-high in regulation for the Celtics, who edged Vancouver, 131-129, in triple overtime a week ago.

"We've put ourselves in a bit of a hole with that road trip but tonight we showed we can dig ourselves out, get back to .500 and go from there," Walker said.

Boston shot 51 percent (45-of-91) from the field and never trailed, opening its largest cushion at 105-67 on Barros' 3-pointer with 4:45 remaining. The Celtics made 13-of-14 shots during one stretch in the second half.

Boston forward Eric Riley set a career high with 14 rebounds while Kenny Anderson handed out eight assists.

"We had great players tonight," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "It's a nice feeling to see so many contributors, but more importantly, we got out on the break more tonight than probably in the last three games combined."

"We've been tentative on offense, tonight we weren't," Anderson added. "My job is to push, push, push, run it down the floor, then if there's nothing there, pull it back. Tonight, it seemed like there was always something there for us."

Isaac Austin scored 13 points and Horace Grant added 12 and 11 rebounds for Orlando. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by the Magic, who entered the contest with the NBA's second-best record.

"They just beat us up and down pretty much from the get-go," Grant said. "We just knew they were gonna come out and try to run it and press us and we just didn't have the answers."

Penny Hardaway continued to play after banging his left knee in the first half, but was held scoreless. Hardaway, second on the team in scoring at 17.6 points per game, will have his knee examined in Orlando on Thursday.

"I don't know what it was but that building was really cold," he said. "I was slipping all over the place. There was no traction on defense. They just ran us off the court. I had no emotion, no energy. I can't remember ever not scoring."

The Magic shot just 35 percent (29-of-83) and suffered their worst loss since a 101-68 loss to Utah on December 14, 1996.

"We didn't have much working tonight," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "We didn't have much energy. We never got into a flow."

After building a 50-35 halftime lead, Boston opened an 83-53 cushion on Barros' 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

"I don't know if we were always on the same page, but tonight we were," Pierce said. "We had a sense of purpose. We put this game away early."

With the game deadlocked, 6-6, Pierce started and ended a 15-2 run with 3-pointers. The Celtics opened a 21-8 lead with 4:59 remaing and were never headed.
