Game Story

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Entrenched in turmoil for the past week, the Los Angeles Lakers did something they may not have thought possible the last few days. They had fun.

Shaquille O'Neal had 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Lakers and interim coach Bill Bertka both moved above .500 with a 115-100 rout of the winless Los Angeles Clippers that snapped a three-game losing streak.

"This was a tough game even though they haven't won any yet," O'Neal said. "After all the controversy, we just tried to go out there and have some fun. I'm proud of the effort that we gave tonight."

Eddie Jones had 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Lakers, who played as if a huge weight were off their shoulders after saying goodbye to coach Del Harris on Wednesday and hello to new teammate Dennis Rodman today.

"There's been so much controversy and burden put upon a young team's insecurities," said Bertka. "The speculation and projection from fans and the media brought that on. Tonight, I think we cleared the way to playing better consistently."

Rodman, who participated in the pregame shootaround, likely will see his first game action in the second leg of the home-in-home series with the Clippers on Thursday.

The disappointing Lakers (7-6) may also have a new coach. The club has not yet decided on Larry Drew or Kurt Rambis, both of whom served with Bertka as assistants under Harris. Bertka went 1-1 as an interim coach prior to the ill-fated Magic Johnson era in the 1993-94 season.

The Lakers held a 49-43 lead early in the second half before a 9-0 run, capped by Jones' dunk with 8:54 left, gave them a 58-43 cushion.

Rick Fox scored 16 points for the Lakers, who constantly were smiling and laughing on the bench in the fourth quarter.

"Now that was Laker basketball," Fox said. "We played tough defense and we ran the court. After the last three losses and the way we played those games, we can't take anything away from the teams that beat us, but we did not play well."

Maurice Taylor scored 20 points for the Clippers before leaving the contest with a sprained right knee in the third quarter. He will undergo an MRI Thursday and may not be available for the rematch with the Lakers.

"Mo was having a hell of a night," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "He'll have an MRI at 8:15 (Friday) morning. I'd be surprised if he played (Friday) night."

"I saw the ball bounce left and I tried to react," added Taylor. "It took an awkward bounce. I was trying to jump off one leg and come down on the same leg and it felt awkward. I felt it twist like it was out of position."

The Clippers (0-10) are off to their worst start since beginning the 1994-95 campaign with 16 losses.

The Lakers have won six straight games against the Clippers since March 24, 1997.

Robert Horry, who had missed the last six game due to an irregular heartbeat, scored 12 points in 19 minutes as the Lakers used their comfortable lead to get their bench involved in the fourth quarter.

Elden Campbell scored 14 points and Travis Knight added 11 for the Lakers, who shot 54 percent (42-of-78) from the field and held a 41-32 advantage on the boards.

Lamond Murray, rookie Michael Olowokandi and Rodney Rogers scored 12 points apiece for the Clippers, who shot 52 percent (41-of-79).

Derek Harper drained a 3-pointer from the right sideline with 3:02 left in the second quarter that gave the Lakers a 43-35 lead. O'Neal's driving dunk with 33 seconds remaining extended the advantage to 47-37.

Murray hit a 3-pointer to pull the Clippers within 49-43 in the opening stages of the third quarter before the Lakers went on their game-breaking spurt.

Harper hit a 19-footer, Knight a layup and Kobe Bryant added a free throw and layup before Jones' slam sealed the Clippers' fate.

"It seemed like a carryover from the second quarter," added Ford. "They got a few breakaways to start the third quarter. You've got to get back. They've got tremendous athletes that run the floor. That catapulted them to the big lead."

Bryant was held to just seven points on 2-of-6 shooting in 25 minutes, but seemed to enjoy his view from the bench as the Lakers pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Fox, who complained about his playing time during Harris' tenure, was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in 31 minutes, including a 24-footer with 4:55 to play that opened a 104-79 bulge.
