Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Rick Pitino's press pushed the fatigue button for the New York Knicks.

Rookie Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker scored 24 points apiece as the Boston Celtics forced 26 turnovers and defeated the New York Knicks, 94-80.

After losing 23 straight games to New York, the Celtics have won the last three meetings. Tonight, Boston was clearly the fresher team down the stretch and held the Knicks to only nine points in the fourth quarter.

Pierce equaled a season high and hit five 3-pointers. Walker added 11 rebounds, helping the Celtics to a 46-38 edge on the boards.

"I thought our press really wore them down tonight," Walker said. "We were the stronger team in the second half."

New York was coming off Thursday's 115-113 overtime win over Minnesota to start a stretch of five games in six nights. Allan Houston, who hit the winning 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds left in overtime on Thursday, led the Knicks tonight with 20 points.

"Coming into this game against the Celtics is the wrong team to play after an overtime game because they play up tempo and they press," Knicks assistant coach Don Chaney said. "I just don't think we had the legs toward the end."

Patrick Ewing added 17 points and 12 rebounds for New York.

"I really don't have any excuses for tonight," Ewing said. "They outplayed us, outhustled us, they were quicker to loose balls and beat us on the boards."

After the Knicks scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game at 56-56, Walker scored the next eight points and Kenny Anderson converted a layup with 5:09 left to cap a 10-0 run.

"We were aggressive and ran the lanes tonight," said Anderson, who finished with 16 points. "We kept pushing the tempo. We stayed after it all night and wore them down."

A 3-pointer by Chris Childs pulled the Knicks within 69-63 with 3:32 left in the quarter, but the Celtics scored the next nine points in less than a minute with the help of two turnovers.

Pierce hit a pair of 3-pointers to cap the 9-0 run, giving Boston a 78-63 lead with 2:34 remaining in the third.

"I found my shot in the third quarter and then we got our defense to turn the ball over and create some easy baskets for us," Pierce said. "That's when we're at our best."

The Celtics started the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run to open its biggest lead of the game at 90-72. Pierce hit a 3-pointer to start the run and Dana Barros converted a layup with 5:58 remaining to cap it.

The Knicks converted just 3-of-13 shots in the fourth quarter.
