Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Great expectations have led to even greater disappointments for the New Jersey Nets.

Antoine Walker scored 28 points and rookie Paul Pierce added 21 as the two combined to fuel a decisive fourth-quarter surge, lifting the Boston Celtics to a 101-92 victory over the slumping Nets.

New Jersey (2-10) entered the campaign as a dark horse contender for the Eastern Conference crown based on its core of young, improving players. However, it is mired in its longest skid since dropping seven in a row from February 28-March 12.

Keith Van Horn, who led the Nets with 22 points, hit a pair of free throws to give his team an 80-79 lead with 5:10 remaining. But just as they had in each of the last four games, the Nets faltered down the stretch.

"It's frustrating," said Van Horn. "But at the same time we have to keep confident. We can't play frustrated. We're not playing to progress, we're playing to hold the lead or contain the lead and when you start playing like that, that's when you start giving up the lead. That's what's happened this last couple of games. I've tried to sit here and give reasons for the past five games and I've run out of them. It's obviously frustrating but we need to get it done."

Walker started Boston's spurt with a jumper before Pierce drained a 3-pointer to give Boston an 84-81 lead with 4:22 to play. Van Horn answered with a turnaround jumper from the left baseline but Boston's dynamic duo again took control.

"We didn't play the type of ball we wanted to play but that shows the character of our team," Pierce said. "We can go out and play a bad ball game and were able to do enough to win."

Pierce calmly sank an 18-footer on the ensuing possession before feeding Walker for a slam that extended the lead to 88-82. Walker capped the run and sealed the victory with a 3-pointer with 1:40 to go that gave his team a comfortable 91-82 cushion.

"I would get into the lane and I would find (Walker) open," added Pierce. "We're getting a good feel for each other on the court. I can kind of read his eyes and see where he wants it."

Ex-Net Kenny Anderson scored 12 points and handed out five assists for Boston, which outscored New Jersey 32-23 over the final 12 minutes.

The Celtics (6-5) had not won three straight games since April 1-5. The teams, which split four meetings last season, wrap up the home-and-home series at the FleetCenter on Monday.

Eric Murdock had a solid night with 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds, filling in admirably for injured point guard Sam Cassell, who still is sidelined by an injured right ankle.

Jayson Williams collected 14 rebounds but was limited to just seven points on 3-of-11 shooting for the Nets, who shot just 36 percent (34-of-94) from the field.

"It's a weird season," said Williams. "The weirdest one that I've been involved in. I don't think our team is very confortable on the floor right now. We have good shooters. That's one thing we've never had a problem doing over the last two years, putting points on the board. And it seems like it's giving us problems right now. We get leads and then we let them back in the game. We've got to put them away. We're at the bottom of the barrel right now."

Dana Barros scored 11 points and Walker grabbed 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who were outrebounded, 55-53, but scored 28 points off 19 Nets' turnovers.

Kerry Kittles scored 17 points for the Nets but committed a turnover in the waning moments of the third quarter that resulted in Greg Minor's tip-in at the buzzer, tying the game at 69-69 and setting the stage for another fourth-quarter collapse by the Nets.

Boston shot 45 percent (40-of-89) and was just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc. But when it counted most, Pierce and Walker both connected from long range.

"We had the chance to put them away," New Jersey coach John Calipari said. "We got the ball where we wanted to but I have to give Boston credit. They made the 3's when they needed and we didn't."
