Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Derrick Coleman made the go-ahead free throw and a crucial blocked shot in the final 16 seconds as the Charlotte Hornets recovered after blowing a big lead for a 91-88 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

A jumper by Vince Carter pulled Toronto into an 88-88 tie with 1:10 remaining, but the rookie missed two shots on Toronto's next possession. Coleman was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws with 16 seconds to go.

The Raptors set up a play for Doug Christie, but his drive from the right side was blocked by Coleman. David Wesley tracked down the loose ball and was fouled, making both free throws for a 91-88 edge with 1.4 seconds to play.

"I went to a guy I thought had a right to win or lose the game, but Derrick Coleman came over and made a good block," Raptors coach Butch Carter said.

Charles Oakley's in-bounds pass was fumbled by Dee Brown and the Raptors never got off a shot, losing for the fourth time in five games.

Coleman had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who have won two of three after a six-game losing streak. Charlotte has beaten Toronto five straight times.

"The major difference in the game was Derrick Coleman," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said. "He was strong all night."

"Derrick Coleman came up with that big blocked shot and the free throw," Raptors forward and fellow Syracuse alumnus John Wallace said. "That was a great play."

Carter, who left North Carolina after his junior year to enter the NBA, joined Brown and Christie with 15 points apiece. The rookie also grabbed nine rebounds.

"Vince Carter is a physical talent," Butch Carter said. "He plays on emotions and makes talented plays, though sometimes he does the things rookies do. We need him to make more jump shots."

"Vince Carter is going to be a heck of a player," said Hornets forward and fellow Tar Heel J.R. Reid. "He'll only improve. Those North Carolina guys are usually pretty good."

The Raptors trailed by 15 points late in the third quarter before rallying behind Brown, who made five 3-pointers in the final period.

Toronto trailed 70-57 entering the fourth quarter before Brown caught fire. A short jumper by Coleman gave Charlotte an 88-83 lead with 2:32 remaining, but Brown hit his fifth 3-pointer and Carter hit a 17-footer to tie it.

"Two things happened in the fourth quarter to get them back in the game," Cowens said. "Dee Brown put on a shooting clinic and we shot poorly (5-of-8) from the free-throw line."

The Raptors trailed by six points at halftime and closed to 59-55 on a transition jumper by Christie with 4:20 remaining. The Hornets rattled off the next 11 points as Coleman made a 3-pointer, jumper and layup. Wesley's tip-in gave Charlotte its largest lead at 70-55.

Wesley had 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Reid added 20 points and eight rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 45 percent (35-of-78) and held a 42-41 rebounding edge.

"Tonight we shot better than we have been the last few games," Cowens said. "That made a big difference."

John Wallace had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Tracy McGrady added 11 points for Toronto, which shot 46 percent (33-of-72), including 8-of-14 from behind the arc. However, the Raptors committed 18 turnovers, leading to 12 points for the Hornets.

Coleman had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the first half, helping the Hornets to a 48-42 lead. Carter kept Toronto close with 11 points.
