Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal had 25 points and nine rebounds and Derek Harper added a season-high 18 points as the Los Angeles Lakers extended their winning streak to four games with a 97-91 triumph over the Phoenix Suns.

O'Neal made 12-of-19 shots and Harper sank 7-of-9 as the Lakers used a late surge to improve to 3-0 under interim coach Kurt Rambis.

"We played pretty good defense and we limit them to one shot especially in the fourth quarter and we hit some big shots as well," O'Neal said. "It wasn't a pretty win but it was a win."

O'Neal's only successful free throw in five attempts capped a 7-0 burst that gave the Lakers a 91-85 advantage with 24 seconds left.

Dennis Rodman, playing in his third game for the Lakers, grabbed six of his 16 boards in the fourth quarter. Los Angeles outrebounded Phoenix, 47-34, and outscored the Suns in the paint, 54-28.

"When Dennis came in he gave us some energy," O'Neal said. "They (Suns) have a lot of shooters. When you play a team like that you have to hope that they're off."

"We're not a paint team," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "Shaq averages 30 in the paint. As a team we probably average 36. You know you're going to get scored on in the paint, but we do not care where we score them as long as we score."

Rick Fox came off the bench to add 15 points for Los Angeles, which shot 49 percent (39-for-80), hitting 11-of-18 attempts from 3-point range.

Tom Gugliotta collected 20 points and nine rebounds and Luc Longley added a season-high 16 and eight for Phoenix, which had won three of its last four games. Clifford Robinson had 13 points and Jason Kidd added 12 and 11 assists for Phoenix, which has lost five of its last six home meetings with Los Angeles.

Kidd made an 18-footer to give the Suns their last lead, 85-84, with 1:26 to play. Harper responded with a 3-pointer from the left sideline to give the Lakers an 87-85 edge with 1:26 to go. Rodman made 1-of-2 free throws with 53 seconds remaining and 22 seconds later, after a missed jumper by Rex Chapman, Fox had a layup to make it 90-85.

Phoenix remained in the game after Gugliotta sank a 3-pointer to with 14 seconds left, but Kobe Bryant responded with a pair of free throws. Kidd made only 1-of-3 free throws with 9.5 seconds to go and the Lakers held a 93-89 lead.

"I would like to say that it had to do with great coaching, but I think Shaq had something to do with that," Los Angeles coach Kurt Rambis said. "Kobe making free throws and a great defensive effort by some people and Dennis got a couple of his rebounds when we really needed them."

Gugliotta had five points in a 10-0 run as the Suns grabbed a 65-57 advantage on Chapman's running jumper with 2:36 left in the third quarter. Phoenix maintained the lead until O'Neal's jumper capped a 12-4 surge and tied it 75-75 with 7:02 to play.
