Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored four of his 21 points in an 11-0 fourth-quarter run as the Indiana Pacers rallied for an 88-81 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Miller hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Pacers a 77-75 lead with 7:16 left. He added a 3-pointer that extended Indiana's advantage to 85-76 with 2:55 to play.

Denver took a 75-69 lead on Cory Alexander's 3-pointer with 9:58 left, but the Nuggets went scoreless for nearly 3 1/2 minutes and managed just one point over the next seven minutes.

"We have a bulls-eye on our back," Miller said. "People come in here trying to take us out. We have to play better because against a quality team, we could have been down by 15. But we are winning ugly and that is all that matters."

Austin Croshere and Sam Perkins hit jumpers to bring the Pacers within a bucket. After Miller gave Indiana the lead for good, Perkins drilled a 3-pointer to make it 80-75 with 6:34 left.

Denver ended its drought on Eric Williams' foul shot with 5:53 to play. A tip-in by Rik Smits and Miller's 3-pointer gave the Pacers a comfortable nine-point cushion with 2:55 remaining. It was Miller's 4,000th career 3-point attempt, tops on the NBA's all-time list.

Indiana coach Larry Bird also criticized his club's effort.

"I'm not pleased with the guys," Bird said. "They didn't come out with the mindset to get it done. We're not a very good team when we do that. I have a very good basketball team when they come to play. Guys aren't playing and that's what they get paid to do."

The Nuggets, who dressed just nine players due to injuries, scored only 11 points in the fourth quarter and made two baskets in the final 10 minutes. Alexander, who finished with 16 points, hit a 3-pointer to pull Denver within 86-81 with 1:36 to play. But the Nuggets were held scoreless the rest of the way and Mark Jackson completed the scoring with a pair from the line with 30 seconds remaining.

"We knew Indiana would make a run, that's the type of team they are," Denver guard Nick Van Exel said. "When it counted most, they out-hustled us. They got the loose balls, the rebounds and the calls."

Chauncey Billups and Bryant Stith missed the game for the Nuggets with sprained annkles and joined the already-injured Raef LaFrentz on the bench.

"We didn't play very good defense," Denver coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It would have been nice to have been able to rest some guys. Three starters we had out -- that hurts."

Chris Mullin was 5-of-5 from 3-point range and scored 18 points for the Pacers. Smits contributed 14.

Jackson collected eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists, while Croshere added nine points and nine rebounds off the bench.

The Pacers rebounded from Friday's 103-100 overtime loss at Orlando and have won six of their last seven games. Indiana improved to 5-1 at home this season and recorded its seventh straight victory over Denver.

"It was an ugly game on both ends," Miller said. "I like the way we gutted it out, but we're going to have to play it much better if we're going to contend for a title."

Van Exel scored 26 points for the Nuggets, who were denied their first three-game winning streak since December 18-23, 1996. Williams added 15 points of the bench for the Nuggets, who lost for just the second time in its last six contests.

Antonio McDyess scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half for the Nuggets, while Danny Fortson grabbed 12 rebounds.

Trailing 46-45 at the half, the Pacers used a 16-6 spurt and took a 61-52 lead on Dale Davis' follow shot. The Nuggets held Indiana scoreless for more than four minutes, ripped off nine straight points and tied it at 61-61 on Williams' two free throws with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Indiana missed its first six shots in the fourth quarter before Croshere started the comeback.
