Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Brian Grant scored six of his 20 points in overtime and grabbed 18 rebounds, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to their ninth win in 10 games, a 97-93 triumph over the Sacramento Kings.

Grant almost became the goat with Portland leading, 96-93, in the closing seconds. He rebounded a missed hook shot by Sacramento's Chris Webber but threw the ball back to him. Webber had a wide-open look from just beyond the arc for a chance to tie, but the shot barely drew iron.

Damon Stoudamire made one of two free throws with 1.4 seconds left to put the contest out of reach.

The Kings had a chance to win at the end of regualtion when Vernon Maxwell stood all by himself on the right side for a 3-point attempt, but the shot glanced off the rim as time expired.

"Chris (Webber) and I talked about that shot coming out of the timeout," Maxwell said. "I had the shot I wanted. Chris gave me a good bounce pass and I just fumbled it. I should have driven the lane but I shot the three and unfortunately it didn't go in."

"Obviously, it is a very disappointing loss," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We had a chance to win the game right at the buzzer. Portland hurt us a couple of times on the boards, especially right at the end."

Arvydas Sabonis added 17 points and 13 boards to help the Trail Blazers win their third straight road contest and improve to 5-3 away from Portland.

Webber finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds for his 15th double-double in 16 games this season. Playing their third game in as many nights, the Kings have lost three of four.

Grant converted a three-point play with 4:02 remaining in the extra session to put the Trail Blazers ahead, 92-90. Grant made two free throws two minutes later, giving Portland the lead for good, 94-92.

The contest was deadlocked, 40-40, at halftime, but the Trail Blazers picked up momentum in the third quarter. Stoudamire, Rasheed Wallace and Isaiah Rider all hit 3-pointers during a 13-4 spurt that put Portland ahead, 53-46, with 6:44 left in the period.

The Kings battled back to tie the contest at 74-74 in the final quarter before Portland regained control. Grant scored four points during an 8-0 run over a 1:48 span to give the Trail Blazers an 82-74 advantage with 6:30 to play.

Sacramento forced overtime with an 11-3 run, punctuated by Webber's tying dunk with 1:16 to play. He netted four points during the spurt.

"He is a man out there," Grant said of Webber. "Ever since I got in the league, me and Chris have always complimented each other. He's always going to be the man. I just try to hold him down as best I can."

"We can't make any excuses," Webber said. "We just have to play our game and if we work hard enough, we will get the win. This is a tough game. It's going to help to have a day off and get some needed rest for the team."

The contest featured 18 lead changes and 13 ties with both teams scoring 46 points in the paint.
