Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Rookie Michael Dickerson scored nine of his 20 points in the pivotal third quarter as the Houston Rockets rolled to another victory over the winless Los Angeles Clippers, 96-77.

Charles Barkley had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Hakeem Olajuwon added 17 and nine for the Rockets, who have won eight straight against the Clippers and 22 of the last 24 meetings. Los Angeles has only one victory in its last 23 trips to Houston.

Dickerson, who starred collegiately at Arizona, had four assists without a turnover and hit four of the Rockets' seven 3-pointers.

"We played as a team tonight," he said. "My teammates moved the ball around to me and I got some open shots. It's my job to make those shots."

"He had a big game tonight," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. Michael's as fast as there is in the league. We hit him with some nice touchdown passes and he made some great finishes."

Houston trailed at halftime, 45-44, but took the lead for good by scoring the first seven points of the third quarter. Olajuwon buried a six-footer to spark the spurt, and Dickerson rebounded his own miss and fed Scottie Pippen for a 3-pointer before making a layup to open a 51-45 lead.

An 11-2 run later in the period put Houston firmly in control. The lead was 55-49 when Dickerson triggered the burst, feeding Barkley for a lay-in before dunking. Olajuwon and Dickerson each had baskets and rookie Cuttino Mobley buried a 3-pointer to forge a 66-51 cushion with 3:47 remaining.

Houston grabbed a 76-56 lead with the final eight points of the quarter. The Rockets hit 9-of-15 shots and made 11-of-13 free throws in the period while Los Angeles failed to attempt a foul shot and committed seven turnovers that led to nine points.

"We've been struggling, and it's harder than you think to blow out any NBA team," Barkley said. "At halftime, I told the team to just relax and go out and play and have some fun. In the second half, we did what we were supposed to do."

"We came out with a lot more defensive intensity," Dickerson said of the second half. "We try to do that every night, but sometimes, someone has to bring it out of us."

Olajuwon scored seven points and Barkley added six in the third, when the Clippers made just 5-of-15 from the floor.

"They're a veteran team. They're gonna find a way to adjust to you," said Clippers forward Maurice Taylor, who scored 14 points. "We had a lot of costly turnovers, and when that happens against a team like that, you're gonna be down 10 points."

Charles Smith scored 16 points and Lorenzen Wright had 13 rebounds for the pathetic Clippers, who fell to 0-14. They are three losses shy of matching the NBA record for consecutive defeats to start a season, set in 1988-89 by the expansion Miami Heat. In 1994, Los Angeles lost its first 16 games.

"We played well in the first 24 minutes. Unfortunately, the game is 48," first-year Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "In the third, we came out and made a couple turnovers and we just collapsed from that point. These guys are very fragile right now, and the bottom fell out psychologically."

Pippen managed just six points but also had nine assists and seven boards, helping Houston to a 44-33 edge on the glass.

Neither team led by more than six points during the first half. After limiting Los Angeles to 11 third-quarter points, the Rockets led by at least 17 throughout the final period.

"There was no comparison from one half to the next," Tomjanovich said. "We had a great third quarter and outscored them by 21 points. We saw what I have envisioned for this team all year."

Mobley scored 13 points and Othella Harrington chipped in 10 for Houston, which rebounded from back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. The Rockets had lost their last two home games to the Spurs and Atlanta Hawks.

Tyrone Nesby and Lamond Murray scored 11 points apiece for the Clippers, who made just 40.5 percent (32-of-79) from the field and 5-of-17 from beyond the arc.
