Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Thirteen down, one to go.

Dee Brown scored 16 points as the Toronto Raptors snapped a six-game road losing streak with their first-ever victory over the Atlanta Hawks, 86-77.

The Hawks had won all 12 previous meetings with the Raptors. Toronto's victory leaves Indiana as the last of the other 14 Eastern Conference teams with a perfect record against the Raptors since they entered the league in 1995-96.

Atlanta pulled within 67-65 early in the fourth quarter, but Brown hit one of his four 3-pointers to spark a 12-0 spurt that opened a 79-65 bulge with 7:02 to play.

"They were looking for me," said Brown. "I was spotting up. They were double-teaming. They were rotating the ball and I was getting open looks."

Charles Oakley and Vince Carter scored 14 points apiece for Toronto, which had not won on the road since a season-opening win at Boston. The Raptors scored 29 points off 23 turnovers, while giving away the ball only 12 times.

"We played hard for four quarters," added Brown. "We played defense. It was the best complete game we played since the Boston game."

Guard Steve Smith, the Hawks leading scorer, looked rusty after returning from a knee sprain that kept him out of the lineup for six games. He managed only 13 points on 4-of-14 shooting after averaging 21.4 points over his first nine games.

"If we hit our free throws and don't turn it over, it's a different game," said Smith. "It was terrible."

Alan Henderson also returned for Atlanta, scoring 18 points after missing four games due to back spasms. But the Hawks have lost a season-high three straight.

"We started out good," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "I thought we were back. We moved the ball, we executed well and all of a sudden, we went flat. We missed free throws. We had 23 turnovers and that's uncharacteristic of us. We're just totally out of rythym. They outhustled us."

Doug Christie collected 11 points and John Wallace added nine for the Raptors, who shot only 38 percent (35-of-93) but took control with a season-high 17 steals.

LaPhonso Ellis scored 15 points and Mookie Blaylock added 11 for the Hawks, who shot 42 percent (27-of-64) but were outrebounded, 47-43.

Trailing 67-61 entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks made their final run as Blaylock nailed a 3-pointer and Ellis followed with a free throw to cut the deficit to two with 10:51 left.

After Tracy McGrady made 1-of-2 from the line, Brown connected from long range and Wallace canned a 14-footer to make it 73-65 with 9:05 remaining, prompting an Atlanta timeout.

It failed to stem the momentum as Carter made a driving layup, Wallace a short jumper and McGrady dunked off a perfect feed from Oakley to cap the 11-0 spurt that opened a 79-65 cushion and put away the Hawks for good.

"We made shots and got it started," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "Dee came in and made shots. John Wallace came in and made shots and also, there was one little point where they made a run at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Then I got Vince in the game with the lob play and everything was good after that."

Wallace made a 12-foot jumper with 8:40 left in the first half to put the Raptors ahead for good, 29-27. Toronto outscored Atlanta, 21-13, over the final nine minutes of the second quarter to take a 48-40 lead at the break.

After Christie's dunk extended the Raptors' lead to 63-50 with 5:22 left in the third quarter, Tyrone Corbin helped Atlanta crawl back into it. He made a pair of free throws and a 12-footer from the right sideline to spark an 11-4 run that pulled his team within 67-61 entering the final period.

Ellis' dunk with 8:57 left in the first quarter gave the Hawks an 11-2 lead, but the Raptors answered with a 12-2 run and went ahead, 14-134, with 4:04 left on a 16-footer by Oakley.

"They jumped out to an 11-2 lead, but we stayed poised and we just got it going," said Vince Carter. "It's a victory and that was much-needed right now."
