Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Terry Porter led a huge effort by the Miami Heat bench, collecting 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a 95-87 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

An offseason pickup from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Porter fed Alonzo Mourning for a dunk that put Miami ahead for good, 86-85, with 3:43 to play. The basket highlighted a decisive 13-0 run, which Porter capped with a three-point play that made it 95-85 with 26 seconds left.

"I was happy to contribute," Porter said. "Every night, it's someone different off the bench. Tonight, it was my turn."

"We couldn't have won tonight without Terry Porter," added Heat coach Pat Riley. "He was rock solid. He's a smart, veteran player. We are lucky we have such a good bench to turn to."

Porter, in his team-high 14th NBA season, did not commit a turnover and was part of a Miami bench that outscored Denver's reserves, 35-2.

"It's an advantage when you have guys coming off the bench who can replace the starters," Porter said. "It gives us another dimension."

Mourning scored 27 points to pace the Heat, who pulled out their 10th victory in 11 games and their sixth straight home win.

Eric Williams scored a season-high 21 points for Denver but managed only two in the fourth quarter. His team led through the entire third quarter but blew any chance at a win by scoring just two points over the final 4:50.

"We extended ourselves a lot tonight," Williams said. "Hopefully, we'll come off the emotion of this one into tomorrow."

Antonio McDyess fouled out with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Nuggets, who own the league's worst road record at 0-8. They have not won away from home in nearly a year, dropping 15 straight away from Denver since a 90-89 triumph at Washington on March 17. The Nuggets went 2-39 on the road last season.

The Heat seemingly took control in the opening minute of the final period, when Porter assisted on 3-pointers by Tim Hardaway and Dan Majerle to give Miami an 80-75 lead. But Williams and McDyess came back with baskets before a layup by Danny Fortson put Denver back in front, 81-80.

An eight-footer by McDyess gave the Nuggets an 85-82 lead with 4:50 to play, but Denver's only points the rest of the way came on Fortson's layup with 7.2 seconds to go.

"This shows the potential that we have," Fortson said. "We'll pull some games out if we play this hard. I don't think we'll have trouble rebounding from this one."

Porter fed fellow reserve Blue Edwards for a dunk to trigger the critical burst. P.J. Brown scored four of his six points late in the quarter before Porter broke behind the defense and converted his three-point play.

"I think we have to take notice that we can't keep going through this," Mourning said. "We have to start playing a perfect game for 48 minutes. We had offensive urgency in the fourth quarter, and for some reason, we play better when we're down. But we can't continue to wait until the fourth quarter."

Williams capped a tight first half by draining a 3-pointer with one second left that gave Denver a 50-46 lead. The Nuggets opened their largest cushion, 60-53, on McDyess' tip-in with 8:38 to go in the third. But the Heat stayed close and pulled within 75-74 heading into the final period.

Hardaway had 18 points and eight assists for Miami, which has won seven in a row against the Nuggets. Majerle chipped in nine points and six boards and Clarence Weatherspoon added eight and six off the bench.

Fortson finished with 18 points and nine rebounds and Van Exel contributed 15 points and eight assists for the Nuggets, who again played without injured guards Chauncey Billups and Bryant Stith. They both have sprained left ankles.
