Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Different uniform, same result.

Chuck Person scored 14 of his season-high 21 points in the first quarter and Bobby Phills finished with 20 as the Charlotte Hornets pounded the New Jersey Nets, 96-82, in a battle of the worst two teams in the Eastern Conference.

Minutes after debuting a metallic gray jersey -- the first sleeveless T-shirt in NBA history -- the Nets fell behind by 17 points and never recovered, losing one of their best players and their 12th game in 15 tries this season.

"I'm going to try to do anything I can to get this ship righted," Nets coach John Calipari said. "I'm not losing faith, but I'm losing sleep."

New Jersey plans on wearing its new uniform a minimum of eight times this season.

"I remember when we wore blue uniforms at Syracuse and went down to Kentucky and got beat," former Net Derrick Coleman said. "We never wore them again."

Jayson Williams, the league's fourth-leading rebounder, became the latest in a notable list of walking wounded for New Jersey, injuring his left thumb in the first half. Williams, who had no points and one rebound in 11 minutes, did not return.

"When he came back (to the bench) he said, `I cannot grab the ball,'" Calipari said. "He's going to have a soft cast put on it. Knowing Jason, he'll play Sunday. He said, `I'm not going to quit on you.'"

The Nets were already without point guard Sam Cassell and center Rony Seikaly due to injuries. Center Chris Gatling also left in the fourth quarter tonight with an injured hand.

The Hornets are also banged up. Coleman has been hampered by a sprained left foot and forward Chucky Brown is out with a groin injury.

"It takes a team effort," said Coleman, whose team plays its third game in three nights Friday in Washington. "I got a bad wheel. Chucky's got a (groin). It seems like everybody's going down."

Charlotte, which is 3-2 after a six-game losing streak, led by only four points in the second quarter and eight in the fourth but built a 26-point advantage, 82-56, in between on B.J Armstrong's 3-pointer with 2:13 to play in the third quarter.

Keith Van Horn scored 28 points for the Nets, who trailed 88-80 before Charlotte's J.R. Reid beat the shot clock with a 20-footer with 1:40 left in the final period. New Jersey's 18-6 run had cut into a 20-point deficit to start the quarter.

"We played team basketball," Coleman said. "We knew New Jersey was going to make a run. We were able to sustain their run."

The Hornets built their comfortable lead with a 17-2 third-quarter spurt, building a 75-51 advantage on Reid's nine-footer with 4:59 left in the period. Reid scored six points and Person added five in the run.

Charlotte's offense was dormant in the fourth quarter. Reid had the team's first three points on a free throw 39 seconds into the period and a jumper with five minutes left.

"We let them get back into it'" said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "We scored one point for a long, long time, then J.R scored."

Reid had 17 points and a season-high 12 rebounds in 43 minutes and Coleman added a season-best 15 boards with 11 points. The Hornets held a 51-42 advantage on the glass.

"Season highs for everybody," Cowens added. "(Three) of them and we still didn't score 100 points. (It) tells you what this season's about."

The Hornets earned their first road win of the year, snapping a six-game skid.

Person capped a 22-3 first-quarter run with his fourth 3-pointer, giving Charlotte a 27-10 advantage. He was 4-for-4 from behind the arc in the opening 7 1/2 minutes.

"I put it up the first three times I touched it and fortunately it went in," he said. "The ball was in my hand a lot."

Kerry Kittles had 17 points and six assists for New Jersey, which lost by at least 14 points for the third time this season.

"I liked that we fought like crazy to get back," Calipari said. "I like to say you have like five of these games a year and you'd like them to come against teams you can beat anyway. It's a bad loss."

Doug Overton scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 32 minutes off the bench in his Nets debut. He was signed Wednesday.
