Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Ron Mercer scored a career-high 35 points as the Boston Celtics snapped a two-game losing streak with a 102-94 victory over the road-weary Denver Nuggets.

Operating against the smaller Corey Alexander, Mercer topped his previous best of 31 set at Houston last March 16, helping the Celtics climb back to the .500 mark after they nearly blew a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. He was 15-of-24 from the field.

"I had my mismatch tonight," Mercer said. "It was a little bit like when I was in college when I had this almost every night. Kenny (Anderson) did a great job getting me the ball. We got into the lane and created some easy baskets."

Mercer's jumper gave Boston a 98-82 lead with 4:27 left before Denver scored eight points in a 27-second span, pulling within 100-94 on Alexander's two foul shots with 1:17 left. But Mercer clinched the victory with a driving layup with 26 seconds remaining.

Antoine Walker added 21 points and a season-high 18 rebounds and Rookie Paul Pierce added 17 points for the Celtics. Mercer, Walker and Pierce combined for 73 points.

"We came out strong, we finished strong," Pierce said. "There were a few lulls in the middle, but overall this is an important homecourt win for us."

Walker was 10-of-26 from the field, while Pierce rebounded after being held without a field goal in Tuesday's loss at Cleveland. Remarkably, Walker did not get to the foul line.

"Twenty-six shots I had tonight," Walker said. "I probably should have gotten to the free-throw line a little bit more, but tonight it was all about Ron. He had a great game. He was on fire."

Alexander scored a career-high 28 points for the Nuggets, who suffered their 16th straight road loss dating to last season. Denver is a league-worst 0-8 on the road this season, including three defeats in the last four days.

"I thought they did a really good job of taking advantage of mismatches out on the court," said forward Antonio McDyess, who contributed 17 points and 15 rebounds. "Cory played a great game, but he just gave up too many inches and Mercer took advantage of that."

Former Celtic Eric Williams added 20 points in his return to Boston.

"I would have taken no points tonight if it meant coming back here and winning," Williams said. "This is a much different team than when I was there. Dana (Barros) and Antoine are about the only players I remember from the team when I played. They move the ball now. They're a very quick team. That's what hurt us tonight."

Trailing by as many as 10 in the third quarter, the Nuggets closed to 77-75 on Alexander's 3-pointer with 11:45 remaining. Boston scored nine straight points, grabbing an 86-75 lead on Bruce Bowen's 3-point play with 9:03 left.

Boston's pressing style wore down Denver, which played in Miami on Thursday. But the Celtics let up in in the final four minutes and almost gave away the game.

"We battled hard to the end, but that's no surprise," Denver coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We got a little tired at the end and we couldn't finish off the comeback."

After rookie Keon Clark and McDyess hit jumpers for Denver, Mercer answered, making it 100-86 with 3:02 left. McDyess made another jumper with 1:44 remaining to ignite the Nuggets' spurt.

Eight seconds later, Denver converted a four-point possession to further cut the deficit. Alexander drilled a 3-pointer and Williams hit the foul shot following a technical against Anderson.

The Nuggets sliced the deficit to six on Alexander's two foul shots with 1:17 remaining. Their hopes faded when Williams was whistled for traveling on the next possession and Mercer scored again.
