Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The most embarrassing aspect of the Los Angeles Clippers' season-opening 15-game losing streak is that its still one shy of the franchise record.

The lifeless Clippers watched helplessly as Tim Duncan scored 27 points and David Robinson added 18 to lead the San Antonio Spurs to their season-high third straight victory, 114-85.

"Tonight was not pretty basketball," said Los Angeles coach Chris Ford. "Our resistance tonight was not good. At this level, guys need to know the difference between good and bad shots."

Los Angeles tied three teams for the third-worst start in NBA history. It can equal the 1994-95 Clippers squad with a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

"I take every loss hard," said Los Angeles forward Maurice Taylor. "But I never in my wildest dreams imagined that this team would be 0-15. I don't care how short a time span you put a team together. I never imagined this. It's very frustrating."

The expansion Miami Heat of 1988-89 hold the all-time record for early-season futility, losing their first 17 games before beating the Clippers.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich has been criticized for his club's inconsistent start after a 56-win season last year, but the Spurs found a perfect victim for their best offensive performance of the season. San Antonio had not broken the 100-point plateau since a season-opening 101-83 victory over Sacramento.

"The guys did a great job of respecting their opponent," said Popovich. "They took the game very seriously and did their work very well at both ends of the court."

Jaren Jackson collected 15 points and Sean Elliott added 13 for the Spurs, who have won four of the last five meetings with the Clippers.

Rookie Tyrone Nesby scored 13 points and Eric Piatkowski and Lorenzen Wright added 12 apiece for the Clippers, who matched their largest margin of defeat. Los Angeles suffered a 103-74 loss to Atlanta on February 27.

Duncan, who was 10-of-16 from the field, scored 12 points as the Spurs took a 34-22 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

"I played with Tim all summmer and that is how he played," said Robinson. "He played his exact game tonight. When he does that, he's hard to stop."

San Antonio shot a sparkling 57 percent (41-of-72) from the field and held a commanding 49-29 advantage on the boards.

Lamond Murray and Taylor each scored 10 points for Los Angeles, which shot 40 percent (34-of-85).

Avery Johnson handed out 10 assists for the Spurs, who were without guard Mario Elie for a second straight game due to an injured left hamstring.

Piatkowski buried a 17-footer with 7:58 left in the first half to pull the Clippers within 43-36. San Antonio responded with a 12-2 run, capped by Robinson's layup with 4:27 left that made it 55-38.

"The most important thing is to stay positive," Piatkowski said. "It's easy to get down but we are grown men getting paychecks for this and we have to remain professional."

After opening a 93-66 cushion after three quarters, Popovich emptied his bench in the final period. Andrew Gaze drilled a 3-pointer that gave the Spurs their biggest lead at 109-74 with 4:31 to play.
