Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Patrick Ewing and the New York Knicks must hate the sight of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Dell Curry drilled a 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds left, lifting the Bucks to their fifth straight win and second dramatic victory over the Knicks in five days, 87-86.

Ewing left with Achilles tendinitis in the first minute, but the Knicks opened a 78-71 advantage with 7:45 on a 3-pointer by Chris Childs. The Bucks used an 11-4 surge, capped by Glenn Robinson's shot from beyond the arc, to draw even at 82-82 with 2:02 remaining.

Childs made a pair of free throws and Latrell Sprewell made a jumper to give the Knicks a four-point advantage with 55 seconds to play. After Robinson missed a jumper, Childs rebounded the miss, but Brandon stole the ball from him and was fouled. He hit the free throws to bring the Bucks within 86-84 with 38 seconds left.

Larry Johnson, who led the Knicks with 19 points, missed a short jumper. The Bucks called timeout with 13 seconds left to set up the winning shot.

Robinson drove the lane and dished to a wide-open Curry in the right corner, where he drained the winning shot. The Knicks had one last shot, but Sprewell's 3-pointer as time expired hit the back of the rim.

"I don't know what their defensive scheme was," Curry said. "Spree (Latrell Sprewell) just stepped away for a second to guard Glenn (Robinson). "I was open in the corner and I don't need a lot of time. Glenn made a good basketball play and I got it off."

"When I saw Glenn driving, I kind of sagged off a little," Sprewell said. "But with a shooter like Curry, he doesn't need much time. He has such a quick release."

It was a short night for Ewing, who leads the Knicks in scoring at just under 18 points per game. He lasted just 29 seconds before heading to the locker room with tendinitis in his left Achilles tendon.

Ironically, Ewing suffered the worst injury of his career against the Bucks last season, when he dislocated a bone in his right wrist. That injury forced him to miss the final 56 games of the regular season and a portion of the playoffs.

Ewing undwerwent a precautionary MRI at Beth Israel Hospital that revealed no tendon disruption. According to a Knicks spokesman, the injury will be treated with ice and inflammatory medication. Ewing is listed as day-to-day.

"The Achilles has been bothering me," Ewing said. "I felt it pull and was concerned, so I took myself out of the game. I hope to return soon."

Robinson scored 27 points and Brandon added 13 of his 17 in the second half for the Bucks, who also defeated the Knicks by one point five days ago when Ewing missed a wide-open eight-footer at the buzzer.

Robinson connected on 12-of-17 shots for the Bucks, who shot 45 percent (33-of-74).

Sprewell added 17 points for New York, whose last three losses have been by one point. The Knicks also had their eight-game home winning streak snapped.

The Knicks held a two-point lead at the half and opened it to 67-60 after Johnson's tip-in. Johnson made 8-of-13 shots and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Curry made a 3-pointer with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter to bring the Bucks within 70-69 before the Knicks responded with their 7-2 surge to open a seven-point cushion.

Milwaukee was able to win despite a horrid night from shooting guard Ray Allen. Allen, who averages 14.7 points per game, scored just six points on 2-of-11 shooting.

"We're a team that finds ways to win," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "I think this team believes a bit that you don't have to play pretty basketball to win games."

New York shot 41 percent (31-of-76) and also held a slim 42-40 rebounding edge.
