Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Toni Kukoc scored 18 of his 28 points in the second half as the Chicago Bulls broke the century mark for the first time this season and routed the equally bad New Jersey Nets, 103-87.

With Chicago reaching 100 points in the win, each fan at the United Center opting to stay for the end of the game between the worst teams in the Eastern Conference received a coupon for a free taco, thanks to a team promotion.

Bulls guard Brent Barry had the first chance to give his team 100 points, but missed a free throw with 1:47 to play. Kukoc sank a foul shot 17 seconds later that put Chicago at 100.

"Real pressure is being at the line trying to feed 22,000 Chicagoans," Barry said. "I felt like Jesus Christ -- the loaves and the fishes."

En route to their sixth championship in eight years last season, Chicago scored at least 100 points at home 21 times.

Ron Harper scored 20 of his 25 points in the first half for the Bulls, who ended a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-13. They had won just once in their previous eight home games and were held under 90 points seven times in that span.

"We finally played a good all-around game," Harper said. "It really felt good. We played a solid defensive game, we passed well and made our shots. We finally played a whole ballgame."

Jayson Williams collected 23 points and 12 rebounds to pace the hapless Nets, who have dropped 10 of their last 11 games and own the worst record in the East at 3-14.

"We need to get on each other, encourage each other and just play as a team," said New Jersey coach John Calipari. "Confidence level really plays into that and it's tough when your confidence level has been zapped like this."

Less than a year ago, these teams met in the opening round of the playoffs, with Chicago recording a three-game sweep.

Harper collected 15 points in the first quarter to keep it close and helped the Bulls grab a 54-49 halftime lead.

A layup by Keith Van Horn, who scored 17 points, pulled the Nets within 56-55 two minutes into the third period. Barry answered with a 3-pointer that seemed to give Chicago control.

Kukoc scored 11 points in the third, leading the Bulls to an 84-73 advantage. But they went scoreless for the first 3:56 of the fourth, watching the Nets pull within 84-77 on a layup by Williams.

The margin was down to 88-82 with 5:40 left after a lay-in by former Bull Scott Burrell. The game changed a second later, when Burrell picked up a pair of technicals and was ejected for arguing with officials.

"What I said was nothing much, just some words," Burrell said. "It definitely wasn't much and it didn't deserve the `T.' I thought I got fouled and said something and got the `T.' The second one came after that and I said something a little worse."

Barry sank both free throws, triggering an 11-0 run that put the game out of reach. Kukoc buried a 21-footer and Harper hit from beyond the arc before baskets by Randy Brown and Dickey Simpkins built a 99-82 lead with 2:32 to go.

"(Harper) and Toni were very aggressivve offensively all night long. The whole team was," said Bulls coach Tim Floyd. "We attacked the basket offensively out of the halfcourt the best we have all year."

Brown contributed 16 points and five steals, Barry added 14 points and six assists and Simpkins had 12 points and eight rebounds. Kukoc chipped in seven boards and five assists.

The Nets committed 21 turnovers, which led to 23 points for the Bulls, and lost their eighth straight trip to Chicago.

"Right now, we're playing like the worst team," Van Horn said. "Our record would indicate that, but I don't feel that way. I know it won't end up that way. I think we believe in each other."
