Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers put up an unusually good fight in their quest to break into the win column. As usual, they lost.

The Clippers matched the worst start in team history and moved one loss closer to the worst in league history, challenging one of the NBA's hottest teams before falling to the Los Angeles Lakers, 103-99.

Falling to 0-16, the Clippers can match the longest losing streak to open the season if they lose to the Lakers at the Great Western Forum on Wednesday in the back end of this home-and-home series. The Clippers also started the 1994-95 campaign with 16 consecutive defeats.

They are one loss shy of the NBA mark, set by the Miami Heat, who went 0-17 as an expansion team in 1988-89 before ending the skid with a victory over the Clippers.

"The team is holding up, but they are frustrated," said Chris Ford, still seeking his first win as Clippers coach. "We need the determination we had tonight to carry over to the rest of the season. As a coach, you have to be proud of how they played tonight, and I am."

Shaquille O'Neal had 31 points and 12 rebounds and Dennis Rodman grabbed a season-high 20 boards as the Lakers ran their winning streak to eight games, a stretch that started with a home-and-home sweep of the Clippers. The last seven of those victories have come since Rodman arrived and Kurt Rambis became coach.

"We knew that these guys were going to be pumped for us, and that is always the worse kind of team to play," said O'Neal, who had five blocks but also committed six turnovers.

O'Neal scored 14 points in the fourth quarter but picked up his third foul in less than a minute and sixth of the game with 54 seconds to play. Maurice Taylor made 1-of-2 free throws to pull the Clippers within 98-95.

Eddie Jones, rumored to be on the trading block, answered with two free throws and dunked off a steal by Kobe Bryant to make it 102-95 with 19 seconds to go. Lamond Murray sank two free throws for the Clippers and, after a turnover by Rodman, Taylor had a lay-in to cut the margin to 102-99 with six seconds remaining.

But veteran Derek Harper made a foul shot with 1.7 seconds left to seal the win, the Lakers' eighth straight over their crosstown rivals.

"The Lakers are the team in L.A. and the fans tonight loved them. But if we continue to play like we did tonight, we will win fans over," Ford said.

Jones made all eight of his free throws en route to 16 points and Bryant scored 11 of his 16 in the final period.

Taylor scored 24 points for the Clippers, who trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half. They had lost each of their previous six games by a double-digit margin, including both meetings with their crosstown rivals.

"I tried getting the point across before the game that they have good players, and I think tonight they showed that they have a talented team," Rambis said.

The Lakers broke open the game with a 21-6 burst in the third quarter. After trailing 47-40 at halftime, the Clippers closed within 49-47 on a pair of foul shots by Taylor with 8:02 remaining. Harper hit a jumper on the next trip down the floor to spark the run.

Rodman had all of his points in the tear, hitting a pair of tip-ins, and Derek Fisher buried a 3-pointer before draining a short runner that opened a 70-53 cushion with 1:44 left.

The Clippers were down, 72-58, heading into the fourth but got back in it with an 11-3 spurt to open the quarter.

"It looked like we were a team tonight, I thought we really jelled," Taylor said. "We were aggressive, especially on defense. We just need to repeat that effort, execute a little better."

"It was our best game," said Clippers center Lorenzen Wright. "I think if we can continue to play like this every night, we can't continue to lose."

O'Neal and Rodman led the Lakers to a 46-34 edge on the boards. They also held a 17-7 edge in fast-break points, helping atone for 20 turnovers and a 1-of-6 effort from beyond the arc.

Tyrone Nesby and Darrick Martin scored 16 points apiece for the Clippers, who made only 23-of-39 free throws. Wright contributed 11 points and 10 boards but was unable to help the Clippers take the lead after the game's first 8 1/2 minutes.

"They're just scratching at this point," Bryant said. "They go out there with nothing to lose, and that makes them a dangerous team."
