Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning continued his brilliant season with 23 points and 16 rebounds as the Miami Heat extended their home winning streak to nine games with an 83-73 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Mourning was 9-of-11 from the field and kept the slow-starting Heat within striking distance early by scoring 20 of his team's 37 first-half points. The Heat remained unbeaten at home since dropping their first two games at Miami Arena.

"It comes down to a sense of urgency for us sometimes," Mourning said. "Tonight, we just flipped a switch."

Facing a 42-37 halftime deficit, Miami opened the third quarter with a vengeance. The Heat began a 14-0 run midway through the period to take a commanding 61-47 lead with 1:09 left. Miami outscored Toronto, 28-8, in the period to open a 65-50 bulge entering the fourth quarter.

"We were stronger as the game progressed," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We were lethargic and a little bit out of it in the beginning. Once our guys got going, they were ferocious. Our guys were committed. Everybody was coming to help and Alonzo was cleaning up on the inside."

Clarence Weatherspoon scored a season-high 22 points off the bench for the Heat, who have won seven straight from the Raptors and 13 of 15 all-time meetings.

Tim Hardaway had 10 points and 10 assists for Miami, which has won 13 of its last 15 games and remained ahead of Orlando for first place in the Atlantic Division.

John Wallace came off the bench to score a season-high 20 points and rookie Vince Carter added 16 for the Raptors, whose eight points in the third quarter were a franchise low.

"We lost this one player vs. player, coach vs. coach," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "We forced the ball, they didn't. Our game plan was to let Mourning score. I didn't care if he got 50 points, but we couldn't afford to give it up the way we did."

Mourning dunked to start the third-period barrage and pulled the Heat even at 47-47 on a free throw with 5:19 remaining.

Dan Majerle, who scored 11 points, and Hardaway combined to score 15 points in the third quarter as the Heat held the Raptors without a basket for a 10-minute stretch.

Hardaway put Miami ahead for good, 50-47, with a 3-pointer from the left sideline with 4:45 left. Majerle's free throws with 1:09 to go capped the 14-0 explosion and sealed Toronto's fate.

The Heat shot 49 percent (32-of-65) from the field and held a 42-39 edge on the boards.

Miami, which entered the contest ranked second in the league in scoring defense, has held its last nine home opponents under 90 points.

Carter was the lone Toronto starter in double figures, as Charles Oakley, Kevin Willis, Doug Christie and Alvin Williams combined for just 27 points. The points were a season low for the Raptors, who suffered a 91-77 defeat to Milwaukee on February 9.

"We weren't mentally ready to accept the fact that they were going to come out charging in the third quarter," said Willis. "That was one mental letdown and we have to put it behind us."
