Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Alan Henderson and Dikembe Mutombo each scored 18 points as the Atlanta Hawks avoided falling under .500 for the first time in more than two years with an 99-85 victory over the slumping Boston Celtics.

Henderson scored 11 points in the third quarter, when the Hawks used a 28-14 spurt to open a 76-61 lead. The Celtics got no closer than nine in the final period.

Steve Smith added 17 for the Hawks, who snapped a four-game losing streak at Georgia Tech, improving to 2-4 at their alternate home. Atlanta has not been below the break-even point since opening the 1996-97 season with two losses.

"I think it was great," Mutombo said. "We've been struggling at home. We have to give our fans something and start winning on our home court."

Mutombo dominated inside with 15 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end, as the Hawks posted a 55-37 edge on the boards.

"We kept fighting until the end," said guard Ron Mercer, who scored 18 points for the Celtics. "They pulled it out and hit some big shots when they needed to. They are a big team and it is hard to go against them."

The Celtics forced 17 turnovers with their trapping defense, but only converted them into 17 points. Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens was satisfied with his club's effort against the press.

"They make it tough with every team they are playing against because they are scrambling all the time," Wilkens said. "We walked throught it because I want my guys familiar with it."

"We've got a lot of veterans," Smith added. "It makes it easy. You just can't panic and start throwing the ball around. Just take your time and draw the double-team and somebody has to be open."

Boston has dropped five of its last six following a season-high three-game winning streak, falling three games under .500. The Celtics shot just 41 percent (36-of-88) from the field.

Antoine Walker scored 19 points for Boston, but had just seven after the first quarter.

"We have been playing hard right now ... but hard is not getting the job done," Walker said. "We have to start stopping people if we are going to have any success in this league."

Mercer hit a a jumper with 4:02 remaining that capped a 9-2 spurt and pulled the Celtics within 89-80, but Boston scored just five points in the final four minutes. Smith and Dikembe Mutombo each hit two foul shots, giving the Hawks a 95-82 cushion with 2:23 to play.

LaPhonso Ellis scored 14 points and Mookie Blaylock added 12 as all five Atlanta starters reached double figures for the first time this season. Blaylock also dished out a season-high 11 assists.

The Hawks used a 16-6 run to open a 45-35 lead before Boston responded with a 12-3 spurt to close to 48-47 at the half. Atlanta took control in the third period, erupting for 30 points.

"I think there's not one person on the starting lineup that is committed to being a great defensive player and that is a sign of inexperience and youth," Boston coach Rick Pitino said.

The Hawks built an 87-71 lead on Smith's two foul shots with 6:17 remaining and coasted to victory.

"We're coming back," Wilkens said. "We just have to be determined. We seem to be understanding more about what we want defensively and we're getting back into sync again."

Neither team made a 3-pointer as the Celtics were 0-of-6 and Atlanta 0-of-5.

Prior to the game, the Celtics traded Andrew DeClercq and a 1999 first-round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for center Vitaly Potapenko.
