Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone went down with a pain in his leg in the final minutes of the first half. In the final minute of the game, he caused Antonio McDyess some pain.

Malone returned from an injury to score 10 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and make a key steal in the waning moments as the Utah Jazz hung on for a 94-89 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

McDyess scored all of Denver's points in an 11-4 run that cut the deficit to 90-89 with a minute to play. Shortly after Utah's John Stockton sank two free throws, McDyess was stripped by Malone just past mid-court. McDyess fouled Malone, who sank both free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the win.

Malone left the game with two minutes left in the second quarter with a strained right quadricep. He rode a stationary bike during halftime and played the second half with a noticeable limp but still grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out six assists.

McDyess finished with 39 points, including 15 in the final period, and grabbed 11 rebounds but was unable to lift the Nuggets to their first win in 11 road games this season.

Stockton had 16 points and five assists and Jeff Hornacek added 13 and six for the Jazz, who joined the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat as the only teams with 15 wins. Utah is one-half game behind Portland (15-3) for the league's best record.

The Jazz owned a 78-65 cushion on Malone's jumper in the opening stages of the fourth quarter. McDyess came back with a 17-footer and Johnny Taylor converted a three-point play as Denver began to chip away.

The margin was 82-72 when McDyess had a pair of baskets and Taylor hit a follow shot to make it a four-point game with seven minutes remaining. Two free throws by Malone pushed the advantage to 90-82 with 4:27 to play, but McDyess answered with a three-point play and a pair of jumpers to cut it to 90-89.

But after committing the critical turnover, McDyess missed a 3-pointer in the waning seconds and the Nuggets suffered their sixth straight defeat.

Taylor contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for Denver, which made just 2-of-13 3-pointers and committed 15 turnovers that led to 25 points for Utah.

A 16-6 burst late in the second quarter seemed to give the Jazz control. With Utah clinging to a 37-36 lead, Shandon Anderson sank two free throws to trigger the run before Stockton hit a 3-pointer and layup. Hornacek fed Thurl Bailey for a hook shot to cap it, creating a 53-42 cushion with 51 seconds left.

Utah remained in command throughout the third quarter and took a 76-65 lead into the final period.

Malone made 10-of-12 free throws and the Jazz hit 24-of-28 from the line.
