Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Mookie Blaylock finally found his touch.
Blaylock snapped out of a two-week shooting funk by hitting three 3-pointers during a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Atlanta Hawks won a road game from the Detroit Pistons for the the first time since 1994, 85-72.
"Mookie got his rhythm going and we set some good screens for him," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "Once his confidence gets up, he's gonna make the shots."
Blaylock, who had shot a woeful 29 percent (22-of-76) from the field over his last seven games, scored 18 points, connecting on 5-of-9 3-pointers.
With Atlanta holding a 62-60 lead with 9:36 to play, Grant Long made a jumper before Blaylock sank consecutive shots from beyond the arc for a 70-62 cushion with 7:31 left.
Tyrone Corbin drilled one from long range before Blaylock sank Atlanta's fourth straight 3-pointer, making it 78-67 with 3:47 remaining.
While Blaylock and the Hawks were hot, the Pistons were cold. Detroit missed its first nine shots of the fourth quarter en route to its first division loss of the season.
Steve Smith scored 22 points and Long grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds for Atlanta, which had lost seven straight in Detroit since December 23, 1994.
"It's good for us to beat somebody away from home and also to beat a team in our division," said Smith. "Because it's like two games. If we're tied at the end (of the season) this could be the difference and puts us in (the playoffs)."
The Hawks have won four of their last five games and pulled into a tie with the Pistons for third place in the Central Division.
Grant Hill had 27 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Pistons, who had outscored their previous five division foes by an average of 19.2 points.
"We had some good shots and good looks but they just didn't go in," Hill said. "Sometimes that happens. They defend well. They have big bodies. They do some interesting schemes defensively. They throw a lot of stuff at you."
Atlanta was without small forward LaPhonso Ellis, who will miss the next five games after being placed on the injured list due to back spasms. Pistons guard Joe Dumars was out with a calf injury and is day-to-day.
"With Joe it doesn't matter if he's scoring 20 or no points a game," added Gentry. "When he's on the floor there's a different sense of confidence. If things are going wrong we know he'll get us organized."
Long, Corbin and Alan Henderson each scored nine points and Dikembe Mutombo collected 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 38 percent (27-of-72), including 9-of-20 from long range.
Lindsey Hunter scored 12 points for Detroit, which shot 34 percent (26-of-77) and held a 46-41 advantage on the boards. The Pistons committed 17 turnovers.
"Tonight was one of those nights when our other team showed up," said Gentry. "Not the one we like to put on the floor -- the one that can't shoot. We outrebounded them. We held them to 37 percent shooting but we couldn't get any offensive flow. We never got any good ball movement tonight."
