Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers showed the poise of their legendary coach and beat his former team.

Rik Smits scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and Antonio Davis recorded a huge block with 10 seconds left as Indiana overcame a 10-point deficit and edged the Boston Celtics, 99-96, for its fourth straight win.

Larry Bird, the 1998 NBA Coach of the Year as a rookie and one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players, improved to 5-0 against the team he led to three NBA championships in the 1980s.

"Emotionally, you just want to win," he said. "That's all."

The Pacers, who have won seven in a row in the series, have the second-best record in the Eastern Conference at 15-5, one-half game behind Miami.

"If we are to be a championship team, we are supposed to win games like this," Bird said.

Smits gave Indiana the lead for good, 98-96, with a jumper from the left side with 26 seconds left and watched as Davis rejected Antoine Walker underneath with 10 seconds to play.

"We seemed to put ourselves on the block and get out of it," Davis said. "I was scared of a foul."

"We ran the play perfectly," Walker said. "And I don't know where he came from."

After Travis Best sank the first of two free throws, Boston's Dana Barros, who made his first three 3-pointers, missed from the top of the arc as time expired.

"I had a good enough look," Barros said.

Walker finished with 16 points and rookie Paul Pierce added 15 for the young Celtics, who led 88-78 with 6:49 left before completing their dreadful road trip at 0-5.

"That's the best we've looked all year," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino, whose team has lost seven of eight. "We ran our plays. They are just better than we are right now."

Boston lost its first four games on the trip by an average of nearly 14 points.

"We are a much better basketball team than we were when we started this trip," Pitino added.

The Celtics led today for two full quarters but lost control in the final minutes. Reggie Miller scored all seven of his fourth-quarter points during a 13-2 run which gave Indiana a 91-90 edge.

Miller, who finished with 19 points on a sore right ankle, got the Pacers within 88-85 with 5:24 to go on one of his two 3-pointers. He later sank a pair of free throws as Indiana closed to 90-89 with 4:16 to play.

"Reggie relishes the opportunity to take the big shots like those down the stretch," Davis said.

Boston had shaken off several comeback attempts in the second half. But Smits' free throws with 3:39 remaining capped the 13-2 run and gave the Pacers their first lead since the second quarter.

Indiana shot 44 percent (34-of-78) from the floor but buried 25-of-31 free throws (81 percent). Smits was 8-of-8 and Davis, who finished with 14 points, sank 8-of-11.

Pierce scored three consecutive points to rebuild an advantage for the Celtics, but Best hit a 3-pointer with 2:39 left and 26 seconds later Smits followed Walker's miss with a jumper, putting Indiana ahead, 96-94.

The teams traded a pair of empty possessions each before Walker's lay-in with 46 seconds to play tied it. Smits, though, followed with the go-ahead jumper.

"It was nice to have the hot hand tonight," Smits said. "The coaches were calling the plays for me down the stretch.

"We'll take the win. We know that we can make the plays coming from behind, but we'd rather not play that way."

The Celtics trailed by as many as 12 points in the first quarter but used a 16-2 run in the second to take a 39-34 lead.

Kenny Anderson scored 12 points and Ron Mercer added 11 for Boston, which shot 47 percent from the field (38-of-81), sinking 6-of-11 from behind the arc. Mercer and Walker combined to hit 11-of-38 shots.

Dale Davis finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers, whose reliable bench was outscored, 33-27.
