Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns were desperate for a win at home. Jason Kidd made sure they got it.

Kidd recorded his fifth triple-double of the season and ignited a key 18-6 run in the fourth quarter as the Suns snapped a four-game losing streak at America West Arena with a 104-90 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Kidd finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 14 assists as the Suns avoided falling under .500 for the first time since ending the 1996-97 season with a 40-42 record.

"The biggest thing is that hopefully that doesn't have to be the scenario every night," Kidd said. "I don't think my body can deal with triple-doubles. My job is to help (the big guys) out as much as a I can. When I come inside to rebound, it helps push the ball downcourt."

Kidd had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists in the fourth quarter alone as he notched his 24th career triple-double and 11th with the Suns. His five triple-doubles this season are one more than the rest of the league combined and he has recorded at least a double-double in 13 of his last 17 contests.

"Jason Kidd again was unbelievable," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "I know you guys (writers) take that for granted but I do not. I hope everybody appreciates how special he is."

"We talked about not letting him get in a creative mode and not letting him post up," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich added. "The guy's such a winner, such a gamer, he's amazing."

Houston forward Charles Barkley could not accept losing to the Suns and took the opportunity to lash out at his former club.

"It's disappointing losing to this team," Barkley said. "Let's look at it. We're better than that team. They're not on our level. It's frustrating to lose to a team like that. Their team is obviously struggling. I feel bad for the fans because they have great fans here and what they put on the court now, I feel bad for the fans."

Phoenix improved to 9-0 when scoring at least 100 points, while Houston dropped to 0-5 when allowing an opponent to reach the century mark. Rockets star forward Scottie Pippen managed just four points in 35 minutes.

Tom Gugliotta added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix, which was without starting center Luc Longley due to a bruised left hip. Longley was replaced by 6-10 forward Danny Manning, who contributed 15 points.

"We've been struggling at home," Gugliotta said. "This was a big lift for us. We needed to get the victory at home, especially going on the road."

Phoenix grabbed a 77-75 lead on Cliff Robinson's hook in the lane with 7:15 remaining. The Rockets tied it on Hakeem Olajuwon's hook but Kidd's jumper put the Suns ahead for good.

George McCloud was scoreless through three periods but hit two 3-pointers off the bench during the run, helping Phoenix break it open down the stretch.

The Suns made 11 of their first 18 shots in the final quarter. They stretched their lead to 91-80 on McCloud's second 3-pointer with 3:43 to play and made it 95-83 on Joe Kleine's jumper with 2:41 left.

"They out-energized us in the second half," Tomjanovich said. "They got their running game going. They got into a scramble game we didn't want to get into."

Barkley had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Olajuwon added 17 and 13 for the Rockets, who opened a 61-53 lead midway through the third period.

The teams combined to miss 35 shots in the first quarter as the Suns struggled to a 15-12 lead. Phoenix was 7-of-22 from the field and Houston just 5-of-22. The 12 points represented a season low for the Rockets.

"I hope this will give us some confidence," Ainge said. "I was not really happy with our first-half performance. I thought Houston was flat in the first quarter and we should have been up more than we were."

But Houston erupted for 32 points in the second quarter and grabbed a 44-37 halftime lead. Sam Mack had 11 of his 12 points in the period.

Phoenix pulled within 68-67 at the end of the third quarter when Rex Chapman followed in Chris Morris' air ball at the buzzer. That was the only basket for Chapman, who was 1-of-10 from the field.

Robinson scored 13 points and Kleine added 10 for the Suns, who improved to just 5-7 at home this season.

Othella Harrington scored 10 points for the Rockets, who had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the just the second time in their last seven contests. Houston was 8-of-20 from 3-point range, but just 26-of-62 inside the arc.
