Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Latrell Sprewell scored a season-high 28 points and Allan Houston added 22 as the New York Knicks defeated the Milwaukee Bucks, 108-102, to avoid being swept in the abbreviated season series.

Sprewell, a Milwaukee native, scored eight points in a key 18-8 third-quarter run. His 3-pointer from the left corner with 1:10 remaining gave the Knicks their biggest lead of the game, 84-70.

"We knew we had to play a good one on the road and prove we could win against a quality team," Sprewell said. "Tonight was a total team effort. Milwaukee played well tonight and traps whenever and wherever on the floor. We did a good job against it tonight."

Larry Johnson scored 21 points for New York, which had its highest total in a regulation game this season. The Knicks shot 51 percent (36-for-70) from the field and 83 percent (29-for-35) from the line.

"We got easy baskets and found the open man all night," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We made free throws and played good enough defense to win. Latrell Sprewell played well tonight."

The Knicks had lost two one-point games to the Bucks this season, including last Tuesday's 87-86 defeat in which center Patrick Ewing left the game in the first quarter with Achilles tendinitis.

Ewing has been sidelined since but Chris Dudley again filled in adequately, grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring six points in 32 minutes.

"They're going to play faster with Patrick out," said Milwaukee coach George Karl. "They made a lot of shots they hadn't been making. We made some defensive mistakes. In the first half, the free throw line killed us. We had a lot of fight to our game, but we just didn't finish it."

Ray Allen scored 16 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth quarter for the Bucks, who are 0-3 since making a pair of deals at Thursday's trading deadline. Vinny Del Negro added 16 points and Glenn Robinson 15.

Dell Curry, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer in last Tuesday's win, made a 25-footer from the left sideline to pull the Bucks within 84-73 with 31 seconds left in the third period.

The Bucks scored the first six points in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 84-79 when Allen made a free throw with 10:16 to play. The Knicks answered with an 8-2 surge, pushing the lead to 88-79 when Sprewell made two free throws with 8:25 left.

Allen scored eight points in a 10-2 burst that cut the deficit to 102-98 with 1:04 left. On the next possession, the Knicks had key offensive rebounds after missed shots by Johnson and Dudley. After Milwaukee received a technical foul for illegal defense, Houston made a free throw for a 103-98 advantage with 32 seconds left.

The Knicks closed the game by making 5-of-6 shots from the line.
