Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors had every reason to fold. The Charlotte Hornets did not give them the opportunity.

Without their top rebounder and with their star rookie sitting on the bench nursing a left thumb injury, the Raptors closed the contest on an 9-1 run and defeated the woeful Hornets, 89-82.

As Kevin Willis sat out with a shoulder injury and Vince Carter, the second-leading scorer among rookies, out after injuring his thumb midway through the third quarter, the Raptors relied on veterans Doug Christie and Dee Brown to post their seventh win in 19 games.

"It was good that we were able to play good defense and get some shots to win the game," said Christie. "Especially at home, where you need to hold your advantage. We played with more energy in the fourth and hopefully we can build on this win."

While the Raptors were executing down the stretch, the Hornets were falling apart. Newly acquired Elden Campbell missed a pair of free throws in the final two minutes and Derrick Coleman had a shot blocked and committed a turnover during the same stretch.

"It's hard to swallow a loss like this," said Hornets guard Eddie Jones. "If we put our team together in two days, we should be able to beat a team like that. We are a better team. Toronto is not a playoff team."

Carter, who came into the game averaging 16.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, scored just three points and committed three turnovers in 18 minutes. In fact, the Raptors' starting froncourt of Carter, Charles Oakley and John Thomas was limited to 14 points.

But the Raptors offset their frontcourt woes by getting 17 points apiece off the bench from Brown and John Wallace. Tracy McGrady and Michael Stewart hit the boards hard in reserve role, collecting seven rebounds apiece.

"Most important was the effort that Oakley, Doug Christie and Dee Brown gave to keep it together," said Raptors coach Butch Carter. "The frustrating part is that we have no practice time. The bench was very productive, efficient and gave us minutes. It shows I can coach a little bit when you get that efficiency off the bench."

Toronto held a 45-40 rebounding edge and helped itself by making 31-of-38 free throws. The Hornets shot just 39 percent (29-of-74) from the field, including 2-of-14 from 3-point range.

The Raptors took a 55-42 lead into the third period but endured one of the worst quarters in franchise history. Making just 2-of-25 shots, Toronto was outscored 19-9. The points were one more than the team record low and the two baskets matched a club low. Both records were set two games ago against Miami.

Charlotte came all the way back to take an 81-80 lead with 1:47 left when Jones stripped Brown and went in for an uncontested dunk. Brown responded by hoisting up a 3-pointer and David Wesley fouled him. Brown, a 65 percent foul shooter, made all three shots.

"I have been in that situation before and I am a pretty good free-throw shooter," Brown said. "I was hoping to get a four-point play."

After Bobby Phills hit a free throw with 83 seconds left to get Charlotte within 83-82, Christie drained a long 3-pointer from the right corner 22 seconds later. Campbell missed two free throws with 47 seconds left but the Hornets forced a 24-second violation.

Wesley committed a turnover and foul with 15 seconds to go and Alvin Williams sealed the contest with a pair of free throws.

"I don't know if we were tired our what but we could not finish the plays," Wesley said.

Charlotte, which had won five straight from Toronto, converted just 63 percent (22-of-35) of its free throws and committed 18 turnovers.

Campbell, Jones, Wesley and Chuck Person had 13 points apiece for Charlotte. Rookie Ricky Davis added a season-high 12 off the bench.

Coleman finished 2-of-11 from the field with six turnovers.
