Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Andrew DeClercq made a favorable first impression on Cleveland Cavaliers fans.

DeClercq grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and Brevin Knight scored a season-high 19 points and handed out nine assists as the Cavaliers continued their home mastery of the Detroit Pistons with an 86-82 victory.

DeClercq was making his first start in his home debut since being acquired from the Boston Celtics for Vitaly Potapenko prior to last Thursday's trading deadline. The 6-10 center came into the contest averaging just 4.1 rebounds per game.

"I was kind of nervous on how the crowd would react to me coming in, especially coming from Boston," DeClercq said. "I was aware that I had a lot of rebounds after the first four shots went up, the ball just ended up in my hands. The ball was bouncing my way tonight. I just try to keep the ball alive."

"We got a tremendous effort off the glass by Andrew and if you look at Shawn Kemp and Corie Blount chipping in with another 17 rebounds, I see us being little different on the glass as a team," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello, whose team was still outrebounded, 48-44. "I don't think anybody wants to be 28th or 29th in the NBA in rebounding. That's where we've been, toward the bottom of the league up until this point."

After a tip-in by Grant Hill pulled the Pistons within 66-64 with 3:49 left, Knight and Cedric Henderson each hit a pair of foul shots before Henderson made a driving layup to push the lead to eight with three minutes remaining.

Cleveland took its biggest lead at 80-69 with 1:46 remaining on Wesley Person's 3-pointer. The Pistons got no closer than the final score.

Kemp scored 20 points to lead the Cavaliers, who have won 13 of the last 15 meetings at home against Detroit. Cleveland had lost its previous two games against the Pistons this season by a combined 31 points.

The Cavaliers have won three of their last four overall to even their record (10-10) for the first time since they were 5-5 on February 24. They have not been above .500 this season.

Hill tallied 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Detroit, which has dropped consecutive divisional games after winning its first five contest within the Central Division. Hill struggled to an 11-of-29 shooting performance.

Joe Dumars added 18 points for Detroit.

"Well, we got outhustled and that's the big key right there," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "The Cavs played Monday night and got back late and we looked like the team that played Monday night and they looked like the team that had rest."

After a lackluster first half in which the teams combined for just 67 points, the Pistons used a 9-0 surge capped by Don Reid's jumper to take a 51-42 lead with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter.

However, Knight made consecutive baskets to trigger a run of 14 straight points that gave Cavaliers a 55-51 advantage with under a minute remaining in the period. Knight scored nine points in the spurt.

"We needed a spark in that third quarter, so I took advantage of the opportunities I got," Knight said. "When I get an open shot, I have to take it."

Knight made 7-of-14 shots as the Cavs won despite shooting a lowly 33 percent (27-of-81).

The Cavaliers got their work done on the line, making 28-of-40 while Detroit converted 10-of-16. Cleveland was especially effective in the fourth quarter, going 15-of-19 from the lin.

The Cavaliers also played without shooting guard Derek Anderson, who missed the game with a contusion of the right knee.

Detroit shot 42 percent (33-of-79) and committed 21 turnovers, including 17 in the first half. Despite their carelessness with the ball, the Pistons trailed just 34-33 at intermission.

"We turned the ball over 17 times in the first half and that's unacceptable," added Gentry. "We stood around and never made a hard cut all night. We just didn't play well. It was a real disappointing effort, a very disappointing effort."
