Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon scored 26 points and Othella Harrington added 23 off the bench as the Houston Rockets led from start to finish and survived a late rally for a 114-109 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

The Rockets have dominated the series, winning nine in a row against the Nuggets, including three meetings this season. Houston has not lost to Denver since January 30, 1997 and has won its last five visits to McNichols Arena since April 7, 1996.

The Rockets entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 91-72 lead, but Chauncey Billups scored 17 of his season-high 22 points in the period to fuel a furious Denver comeback.

Billups drained his fifth 3-pointer of the quarter to pull the Nuggets within 109-104 with 40 seconds remaining.

Antonio McDyess, who scored 17 points, made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 109-106 with 21 seconds left, but Olajuwon scored the next four points from the line to give Houston a 113-106 cushion with 11 seconds to go.

"I was just going with the flow," Olajuwon said. "Last time I looked (the lead) was 14 points, next time I looked it was three. We don't like to make it easy. We like the hard way. When it's difficult, then we enjoy it."

"For us to beat teams like this, we need to come out from the opening tip and play to win," Denver coach Mike D'Antoni added. "We showed great heart at the end and Chauncey did some amazing things."

Cory Alexander scored 18 points off the bench and reserve forward Johnny Taylor added a career-high 16 for the Nuggets, who have lost eight of their last nine games.

Charles Barkley had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Scottie Pippen added 12 points and 10 assists for the Rockets, who have won five of their last six games.

"We need to work on killer instinct," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "But give them credit, those guards started slinging threes and it got crazy out there. We talked about not letting human nature step in and letting them get any momentum. But in the second half, a relaxed play here and a relaxed play there and they got a couple of breaks."

Denver point guard Nick Van Exel scored 15 points but was ejected after barking at officials with 5:42 left in the third quarter.

"I'm sure he said something," added D'Antoni. "He was frustrated and so were we."

Rookie Michael Dickerson collected 14 points for the Rockets, who shot 48 percent (42-of-88) and held a 44-25 advantage on the boards.

The Nuggets made half of their 80 shots, including 14-of-26 from long range. Billups was 6-of-11 from three-point range while Taylor sank 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Harrington, who sat out most of the fourth quarter, was 10-of-17 from the field in just 22 minutes.

Van Exel buried a 3-pointer with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter to pull Denver within 18-15. But the Rockets responded with a 14-4 run to close the period with a 32-19 lead.

Houston maintained a comfortable lead until Billups' shooting spree in the fourth quarter.

"We got off to an ugly start and I don't know why," said Billups. "Sometimes the guys, I think, get confused. We wanted to run these guys. They played last night. This was a big game for us and I'm glad we went down fighting."
