Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Rookie Vince Carter scored 17 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Toronto Raptors recorded their third victory in as many nights, 103-101 over the Detroit Pistons.

Carter, who matched his season high for points, was 9-of-13 from the field. He completely dominated the final two minutes, scoring eight points and recording the decisive basket with 13.3 seconds to go.

"We have got to stop playing like this," said Carter. "We pulled it off, but it is tough to catch up. We were playing like we were supposed to be tired but stepped it up in the second half. This is a step in the right direction. If only we could stay consistent."

"Carter has got a future ahead of him. He has all the talent in the world," said Pistons veteran guard Joe Dumars.

The winning streak is Toronto's longest since taking four in a row in January 1998. The Raptors (9-12) needed 42 games last season before recording their ninth win.

"It's only 21 games, I would say it is encouraging," said Raptors coach Butch Carter. "We still have to be a force on our home court in Toronto. I don't want to get too excited, New Jersey played great last year and now it is flipped around."

Dee Brown scored 19 points and Doug Christie added 14 for Toronto, which closed the game with a 7-0 burst. The Raptors defeated Detroit for only the second time in 13 meetings.

Bison Dele scored 23 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 19 for the Pistons, who had a six-game home winning streak stopped. Detroit was without coach Alvin Gentry, who missed the game with the flu. Assistant Gar Heard served as coach.

Two free throws by Lindsey Hunter put Detroit on top, 97-94, with 1:42 to go before Carter began to take control. The fifth pick in this past summer's draft sank two free throws with 80 seconds remaining.

Grant Hill countered with a driving layup and Jerome Williams hit two free throws to push the lead to 101-96. Hill finished with 18 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals, but also committed six of Detroit's 20 turnovers.

Carter hit a running jumper with 48 seconds left and added a slicing layup 31 seconds later to get the Raptors within 101-100. Dumars threw away the ensuing inbounds pass and Carter converted another runner in the lane with 13.3 seconds to go.

After Hunter missed a long 3-pointer, Brown sank a free throw with 2.6 seconds left to cap the scoring.

"We knew what they were going to do on that play, run two guys at me," said Dumars of the errant inbounds pass. "I knew someone had to be open but I had two 6-10 guys in front of me and they were impeding my vision. I took off for the corner trying to clear my vision. I saw Lindsey for just a second but led him too much."

Detroit led by 11 at the end of the third quarter and still maintained an 87-76 edge with 7:44 left in the contest. But the Raptors rallied with a 9-0 burst to get back in the game.
