Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks may have found at least a temporary solution to their point guard problem as Haywoode Workman had nine points, eight rebounds and eight assists in his season debut, a 99-83 win over the Boston Celtics.

Workman, signed to a 10-day contract on Wednesday, played 26 minutes and handled Boston's press as the Bucks snapped a season-high four-game losing streak.

"I thought things went smooth," Workman said. "I tried to limit my turnovers (seven), do what came natural and get loose balls and rebounds."

The slide coincided with a three-team trade that sent point guard Terrell Brandon to Minnesota and brought point guard Sam Cassell from New Jersey. With Cassell sidelined with a sprained ankle, Vinny Del Negro was playing out of position at the point.

Glenn Robinson scored 23 points and Ray Allen added 21 and seven assists for the Bucks.

Antoine Walker had 16 points and seven rebounds and Kenny Anderson added 14 points for Boston, which was held to 25 points in the second half on 8-of-31 shooting. The 25 points match a franchise worst, set most recently against the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 8, 1995.

"In the second half we played defensively, that's how we should play," said Milwaukee coach George Karl. "We had some confidence going. Getting that losing streak behind us and getting some momentum was key."

"It was a tale of two halves. The first half we created, moved the ball, and the fast break went well," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "In the second half, we had 14 turnovers and were lacking fundamentals."

Walker had seven points in a 15-5 run that he capped with a 3-pointer to give the Celtics a 50-37 lead with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Anderson made a layup to give Boston its biggest lead, 55-39, with 2:49 to go in the second. Allen answered with a 3-pointer to trigger a 12-0 burst that cut Boston's lead to 55-51 after Robert Traylor completed a three-point play with 17.4 seconds left. Ron Mercer, who had 13 points, made a 3-pointer at the buzzer and Boston took a 58-51 lead into the break.

Milwaukee opened the third with a 10-3 surge to tie the score at 61-61 when Tim Thomas dunked at 9:06. The Bucks took the lead for good when Traylor dunked for a 70-69 edge with 4:12 left in the third.

Boston shot just 4-of-14 in the third and missed its first three attempts of the fourth before Walker had a layup to cut the deficit to 77-76 with 9:55 left. Neither team scored until Robinson's 3-pointer made it 80-76 with 8:16 remaining.

Boston got within 80-79 when Walter McCarty had a layup with 6:58 left, but Allen answered with a running jumper to spark a 12-0 run. The Celtics were scoreless until Mercer hit a 17-footer to make it 92-81 with 2:45 left.
