Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp had 20 points and nine rebounds and Brevin Knight collected 20 points and six assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 100-93, for their third straight win.

Wesley Person contributed 18 points and six assists and Cedric Henderson added 11 points and eight rebounds for Cleveland, which made 17-of-19 free throws in the fourth quarter to protect an eight-point lead.

"I'm very proud of the effort tonight against an outstanding Laker team," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "We knew it was going to be a fight. At one stretch, I thought both teams met before the game and agreed not to stop each other from scoring. There were more baskets scored on consecutive trips down the floor than I have seen in a long time. We got some fortunate bounces tonight."

Shaquille O'Neal matched season highs with 37 points and 19 rebounds for the Lakers, who have lost two of their last three following a 10-game winning streak. Glen Rice had 24 points, six rebounds and five assists, but Los Angeles shot 44 percent, including 23 percent (3-for-13) from 3-point range.

"We didn't move the ball very well. I think we beat ourselves more than the opponent when we don't play smart," O'Neal said. "The Cavs moved the ball very well and their guards were dominating our guards. When you're playing against a team that doesn't have that many big people you have to get it back and back out, and you have to be smart with it, not dribbling between your legs or doing something your not supposed to do."

Both of the Lakers' recent losses have come without flamboyant forward Dennis Rodman, who took a leave of absence on Sunday for what team officials called personal problems.

The first quarter featured four ties before Kemp's running jumper gave the Cavaliers a 22-20 edge with 2:53 to play. Henderson followed with a short hook shot to make it 24-20 with 1:43 left and Cleveland never trailed thereafter.

The Cavs opened the second quarter with an 8-1 burst and took a 34-23 lead when Derek Anderson hit a 3-pointer with 10:07 remaining. They took their biggest lead of the game when Anderson dunked for a 41-28 cushion 6:46 before halftime.

Los Angeles used a 12-5 surge, closing within 47-42 on Rice's 22-footer with 3:42 left.

Kemp and Person each had 11 points in the first half, helping the Cavaliers take a 53-46 lead into the break. The Lakers failed to close the deficit under six points in the third period and trailed, 75-67, at the end of the quarter.

"It was good teamwork and the crowd came out tonight and gave us a lot of help there," Kemp said, referring to the sellout of 20,562. "As we get better, we'll get more fans. You have to make Shaq work and we worked him a little harder today. It was not the typical 37 points he gets."

O'Neal's dunk capped a 10-4 surge and pulled Los Angeles within 79-77 with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. But Knight answered with a 14-footer and Kemp followed with an eight-footer to make it 83-77 with 6:27 to go.

Kemp, Knight and Person combined to go 10-for-10 from the free throw line over the final 3:30, sealing the victory.
