Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Bryant Reeves continued to emerge from his season-long funk with 28 points and 13 rebounds as the Vancouver Grizzlies snapped a 13-game losing streak with an 86-81 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Rookie Mike Bibby and Shareef Abdur-Rahim also played major roles as the Grizzlies posted their first win since February 23. Bibby had six points and Abdur-Rahim five during a 15-4 run to close the game.

Abdur-Rahim finished with 21 points for Vancouver, which also stopped a 10-game losing streak to Minnesota. Despite the team's poor play, the Grizzlies saw 17,466 fans turn out.

"It feels really good to win," Bibby said. "We were happy and a bit surprised that the crowd is still coming. They were extremely loud tonight. That is one of the reasons we won. They were really behind us and it puts a lot of confidence in our play."

Kevin Garnett scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Joe Smith added 10 and 12 for the Timberwolves, who have dropped four straight games and are 5-9 since opening the season with eight wins in 10 games.

"We missed shots, you don't always make them," Garnett said. "You have to keep your head up. The Grizzlies get paid too, they are an up-and-coming team. I don't want to sit here and tell you we played like crap. They played well and won."

Vancouver, which had not beaten Minnesota since April 3, 1996, trailed 77-71 with 4:49 left following a layup by Terrell Brandon. But Abdur-Rahim hit a free throw with 3:50 to go and Reeves followed 30 seconds later with a layup.

A steal by Bibby led to a layup and Abdur-Rahim's dunk gave Vancouver the lead for good with 1:57 left. Bibby's fifth steal of the game resulted in another layup and an 80-77 lead.

Sam Mitchell hit a free throw with 56 seconds to go but Abdur-Rahim, who was 15-of-16 from the line, hit two more 23 seconds later. Dennis Scott, who was signed to a 10-day contract on Wednesday, drove for a layup to cut Minnesota's deficit to two points. Bibby hit a free throw with 20.5 seconds remaining but Brandon, who committed just three turnovers in 40 minutes, threw an errant pass and Reeves came up with the steal to ice the victory.

"I have had some games like this before, where I score most of my points from the line," Abdur-Rahim said. "I just play and take what they give me. Whatever it is, as long as we win, that is all that matters."

Reeves, who came into the abbreviated season woefully out of shape, followed a 21-point, nine rebound performance on Tuesday with his best effort of the season. He was 10-of-18 from the field and helped hold Minnesota starting center Dean Garrett to just two points in 15 foul-plagued minutes.

"(Reeves' play) is definitely the most encouraging thing," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "Now I think we can start to be the team that I envisioned coming into the season. We have been missing Reeves' production all year. It makes us a whole different basketball team."

"I never lost confidence," said Reeves. "It might have wavered a bit at times but I still knew it was there. Sometimes all it takes is one good game or one good shot and you turn things around. Hopefully, that is it."

Smith and Garnett got out of the gate quickly for Minnesota, scoring 15 of the team's first 21 points. But the Timberwolves failed to take enough of an advantage of Vancouver's horrendous first-quarter shooting (2-of-15) and led just 21-15 after 12 minutes.

Reeves and Felipe Lopez, who finished with 15 points off the bench, sparked a huge second quarter for Vancouver with 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Grizzlies made 11-of-18 shots in the period and led 43-42 at the break.

Neither team led by more than six points at any time in the second half.

Mitchell scored 17 points and Brandon had 12, 12 assists and six steals for Minnesota, which shot just 34.5 percent (30-of-87) from the floor.
