Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Karl Malone missed an open 20-footer just before the buzzer, allowing the Charlotte Hornets to escape with an 83-82 overtime victory over the Utah Jazz, their fifth straight home win.

The Hornets had a one-point lead and the ball late in overtime but the Jazz forced a missed 3-pointer by David Wesley and got the rebound. Utah did not call timeout and John Stockton dribbled to the foul line before finding an open Malone on the right wing. But his jumper hit the back rim and time expired before the Jazz could get another shot.

All five Hornets starters scored in double figures, led by Elden Campbell with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Wesley with 16 points. Derrick Coleman added 12 points and 12 rebounds, Bobby Phills scored 12 and Eddie Jones netted 11.

Charlotte snapped Utah's six-game winning streak and improved to 4-3 under interim coach Paul Silas.

"We had a golden opportunity tonight," Campbell said. "When you take a team like that into overtime, you know you have a chance to win. Everyone is coming in and playing tough right now."

"We just kept getting big plays from different guys," Wesley said. "When you play hard and aggressive, you always have a chance to win. We need to attack the basket and make big plays like we did tonight."

The Hornets never trailed in the extra session, scoring the first four points on layups by Campbell and Wesley. Charlotte regained its four-point advantage at 83-79 on a dunk by Campbell with 2:25 remaining. Campbell and Wesley scored four points apiece in overtime.

Two free throws by Stockton and one by Jeff Hornacek pulled Utah within 83-82, setting up the final moments.

The Hornets scored the final eight points of regulation. With Utah ahead 75-73, Wesley drove the lane and dished to Campbell, who slammed it home with 8.4 seconds remaining.

The Jazz had a chance to win, but Stockton's off-balance jumper bounced off the rim and Malone's follow shot was slapped away by Eddie Jones forcing overtime. Malone made just 5-of-21 shots and Stockton was 2-of-10.

"They looked like they wanted to play more and win and that's what happened," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We haven't had any enthusiasm or desire. We're not setting screens. It doesn't look like we want to have any team concept. The team need to find out if they want to be a championship team."

Charlotte made 28-of-32 free throws while Utah made 20-of-34. Both teams struggled from the field as the Hornets shot just 33 percent (26-of-79) and the Jazz connected on 37 percent (30-of-82).

"Tonight we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, but we played mentally tough," Silas said. "I've been preaching to the team that if you play hard, good things will happen. The big fellow (Campbell) played great tonight. He's been a joy to watch."

Utah led 24-16 with 7:51 left in the second quarter before rookie Ricky Davis scored seven points in a surge that closed the half and gave Charlotte a 37-35 lead. The Hornets were just 5-of-25 from the floor before finding the range.

Charlotte built a 48-41 lead in the third quarter, but Utah scored 12 straight points in 2:18 to gain a 53-48 advantage with 5:47 left. Hornacek scored eight, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Hornacek scored 21 points for the Jazz, who dropped to 2-1 on their four-game road swing. Malone scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Howard Eisley added 10 points.
