Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jud Buechler came off the bench to make three crucial 3-pointers down the stretch as the Detroit Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 94-87 victory over the slumping Dallas Mavericks.

Outscored 93-67 in the fourth quarter during their slide, the Pistons (13-11) trailed 82-79 before Buechler sank consecutive 3-pointers to give them an 85-83 lead with 2:44 remaining.

"I was pumped up," said Buechler. "Sitting over there for a long time, coming in and hitting a shot like that. I haven't had a chance to make a lot of those in my career -- being in there at crunch time, big shots like that. I wanted to enjoy it, get the crowd fired up and get my teammates fired up."

"Buechler killed us," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "To their credit, they found the open guy and he delivered on the 3-point baskets."

The Mavericks, who have lost six straight on the road and 10 of their last 12 overall, fought back to take an 87-85 lead on a jumper by Michael Finley with 1:39 left.

Bison Dele made a 10-foot hook shot and added a pair of free throws with 56 seconds remaining to put Detroit ahead for good.

Hubert Davis missed a 3-pointer before Buechler sank his third shot from beyond the arc, a 26-footer from the right sideline that gave the Pistons a 92-87 lead with 28 seconds to go.

"The last one, I was just waiting on them to double," said Grant Hill, who collected one of his nine assists on Buechler's game-clinching shot. "Jud and Joe (Dumars) were out there and I looked for whoever was open and Jud was open. He showed he can be out there on the court when it's crunch time."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 15 points, Hill collected 14 and Dele added 13 for the Pistons, who have won seven in a row against the Mavericks since March 23, 1995.

"I'll take a win right now," Hill added. "It wasn't perfect and it wasn't the way you want to close a game. When we got to the last couple of minutes, we were able to make some stops."

Finley scored 18 points and Shawn Bradley added a season-high 14 off the bench for Dallas, which has lost five straight visits to Detroit.

Joe Dumars and Don Reid collected 11 points apiece for Detroit, which shot 44 percent (37-of-85) from the field and held a 43-32 advantage on the boards.

Davis and Erick Strickland each scored 13 points for Dallas, which shot 47 percent (34-of-72) and committed 13 turnovers.

"I thought we had it," said Strickland. "I think we got too worried about Dumars. Jud is just as good a shooter if you give him the open look. It really does frustrate us to come this close and not win. When you're a team trying to get better, these are the games that frustrate the most. You really have to get down and lock on people to win the close games."

Christian Laettner had eight points and seven rebounds in his second game back from a torn Achilles tendon which had kept him out for the first 22 games.

Detroit coach Alvin Gentry missed Wednesday's loss to Toronto with the flu but was on the sidelines to see his team snap out of its fourth-quarter funk.

"First of all, it's a win and that's what we needed desperately," said Gentry. "There's nothing but positives that can come out of it. There are some things we need to work on and holding a lead is one of them. It was kind of a double-edged sword. We played so well and then we lost the lead. But the positive in that is that we were able to hang on, gut it out and come out with a win."

Holding a 40-37 lead with 5:07 left in the second quarter, the Pistons went on a 17-4 run capped by Stackhouse's 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a commanding 57-41 halftime lead.

But the Pistons were dominated in the third quarter. The Mavs outscored the Pistons, 27-14, and pulled within 67-66 on Bradley's layup with 1:19 remaining.

Hill drove the lane and threw down a thunderous dunk with six seconds left to give Detroit a 71-68 lead entering the fourth quarter.
