Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Even without their leading scorer, the Portland Trail Blazers continue to prove that they are for real.

Arvydas Sabonis scored 13 of his season-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and Damon Stoudamire made four big free throws in the waning seconds as the Trail Blazers snapped the red-hot San Antonio Spurs' nine-game winning streak with a 90-85 victory.

"Sabonis was great," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We did a good job of getting him the ball and moving the ball."

"I was really pleased with this win considering that we just came off a four-game road trip and the present we got was a team that won nine in row," Dunleavy added.

The Blazers (19-5), who have won four of their last five games, tied Utah for the best record in the Western Conference. Portland was without Isaiah Rider, who leads the team with a 16.5-point scoring average. Rider was suspended for tonight's game following an altercation with Jon Barry in Thursday's victory over Sacramento.

Portland trailed 72-70 with 9:44 to play, before Walt Williams and Sabonis drained consecutive 3-pointers to put the Blazers ahead for good, 76-72, with 7:45 to go.

"Sabonis was the difference tonight," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. "He did it down the stretch. We stopped everybody else but we couldn't stop Sabonis."

Sabonis made a pair of free throws to give the Blazers an 86-79 lead with 1:16 left, but the Spurs fought back with a 6-0 spurt, capped by Mario Elie's layup with 21 seconds remaining.

Stoudamire sank two free throws with 19.3 seconds to play to extend the lead to 88-85.

San Antonio had a chance to tie it on the ensuing possession, but Steve Kerr and Sean Elliot both missed 3-pointers before Stoudamire capped the scoring by draining two more at the line with three seconds left.

Tim Duncan had 29 points and 15 rebounds and Elie added 14 points for the Spurs, who also had a six-game road winning streak snapped.

"They just kept pounding on us and hit some big shots," said Duncan. "That's just a real good team. You'd love to come in here against one of the best teams in the league and beat them at home, but the streak wasn't a big deal."

Stoudamire scored 13 points and Williams and Jimmy Jackson added 12 apiece for the Blazers, who split four games with the Spurs last season but have won three straight meetings at the Rose Garden.

David Robinson's offensive struggles continued. After a season-low three-point performance against Golden State on Wednesday, Robinson scored 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting.

Robinson did grab 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who held a 44-42 edge on the boards. However, Robinson had problems guarding the 7-3, 292-pound Sabonis.

"Down the stretch Sabonis was big," said Robinson. "Normally, I feel like I can stop somebody down there. But man, with the sweeping hook, I can't get to that and he did a great job."

Sabonis was 11-of-17 from the field and collected 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who shot 42 percent (33-of-78) and outscored the Spurs in the paint, 40-32.

Avery Johnson had 12 points and eight assists for San Antonio, which shot 40 percent (29-of-73) and yielded 19 points off 14 turnovers.

The game, which featured eight ties and six lead changes, seemed to swing in favor of San Antonio in the third quarter.

Stacey Augmon's free throw with 5:29 left in the third quarter gave the Blazers a 56-51 lead. Robinson responded with a three-point play and Duncan scored four of the next five points from the line as the Spurs went ahead, 59-56, with 3:51 left.

The Spurs outscored the Blazers, 29-19, in the third quarter to take a 68-65 lead into the final period.

"In the third quarter, they made their run," Portland forward Rasheed Wallace said. "In the fourth quarter it was time to make ours."
