Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Glenn Robinson hit a 14-foot jumper with 53 seconds left to put Milwaukee on top for good and Ray Allen overcame an awful game to score all eight of his points in the final 18 seconds as the Bucks held off the Atlanta Hawks, 83-77.

Robinson made two free throws with 2:23 remaining to force the sixth tie of the fourth quarter, 73-73. The Hawks had several chances to take the lead on their next possession but could not get a shot to fall. Steve Smith missed a short jumper, but Mookie Blaylock grabbed the rebound and fed Smith, who could not connect on a 3-pointer.

Blaylock pulled down another rebound and misfired on a 3-pointer from the left sideline. Dikembe Mutombo's rebound maintained possession for Atlanta, but Smith committed a turnover with 1:12 to play.

Robinson gave the Bucks the advantage and Tyrone Corbin missed a 3-pointer for Atlanta. Allen, who missed his first eight shots, sank six free throws in an 11-second span as Milwaukee held on. Allen made his only basket with five-tenths of a second remaining.

After Allen hit two foul shots to make it 77-73 with 18 seconds remaining, Mutombo quickly cut the deficit in half with a hook shot from the right sideline. Allen hit two more from the line with 13 seconds left, and after Blaylock missed a 3-pointer, he was good on two more foul shots with 7.5 seconds remaining.

"I never got going tonight," Allen said. "I was in foul trouble. I had to just play defense. I still had confidence in my shot. I knew I could make shots. It was pleasing to me because I knew I could make the free throws."

"Defensively after the first quarter, I thought we played great," said Bucks coach George Karl. "It wasn't a very pretty game, but we had the best player in Glenn Robinson. We've kind of made it a habit of winning ugly games on the road."

Robinson scored 21 points and Dell Curry and Chris Gatling added 12 apiece for Milwaukee, which won in Atlanta for the first time since November 18, 1994 -- a span of seven losses. The Bucks broke a four-game overall losing streak to the Hawks.

Chris Crawford scored a career-high 15 points and Mutombo added 11 and 15 rebounds for the Hawks, who have dropped two of three following a four-game winning streak.

"The last couple of games I really didn't give the energy like I could and tonight I just wanted to come out and show some energy," Crawford said.

Atlanta led for the entire third quarter until Curry's 3-pointer in the final moments of the period gave the Bucks a 60-59 advantage entering the fourth period.

Neither team scored for the first three minutes of the final quarter and after four minutes of back-and-forth action, Smith drilled a 3-pointer from the left sideline to give the Hawks a 69-66 advantage.

"Both teams went a long period in the beginning of the fourth without scoring," said Robinson. "I think it was a combination of both defense and a dry spell. We just wanted to play strong defense on them."

Gatling, who scored seven of his 12 points in the final period, converted a layup, but Corbin pushed the lead back to three points with a 20-footer. Gatling hit on the second of two free throws with 3:41 remaining and tied the game moments later with a dunk.

"That's my job, my role, to give the guys some energy," Gatling said. "It's up to me to get guys going. I am a high-energy player and I have to play hard when I'm out there."

The Hawks scored 27 points in the first quarter but were held to just 50 the rest of the way. Their struggles were apparent in a 10-second span when Corbin missed two jumpers and Smith misfired on a 3-pointer.

Grant Long sank a pair of free throws with 2:39 left, giving Atlanta a 73-71 advantage. Robinson tied it from the line 16 seconds later.

Blaylock grabbed seven rebounds and Corbin and Alan Henderson had six apiece as the Hawks built a 47-31 advantage on the glass. But they shot only 37 percent (25-of-67), including 4-of-21 from beyond the arc.

"We just didn't execute and play the game well," said Blaylock. "We let them hang in and we caught ourselves behind."

Vinny Del Negro dished out seven assists and Ervin Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73) and converted 25 Atlanta turnovers into 28 points.
