Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Charles took charge.

Charles Barkley scored a season-high 35 points, including the first six in overtime, to lift the Houston Rockets to a 103-93 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Barkley also grabbed 18 rebounds against his former team as the Rockets avenged their only loss in the last seven games, a 104-90 setback at Phoenix on Sunday. After that game, Barkley bashed the Suns, claiming they were "not on our level."

"I just had a good night," he said tonight. "Every night somebody has to step up, and tonight was my night."

No one seemed to be on Barkley's level in this game as the outspoken forward was 13-of-21 from the field and 9-of-12 from the line.

"This is a gigantic win for us," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "It was a game filled with peaks and valleys. Charles was just phenomenal. He did it every way he could. He took it to the basket, he got to the free throw line and he passed the ball out of the double team."

The teams entered the extra period knotted at 91-91 before Barkley made a layup and pair of jumpers to open a 97-91 cushion with 3:15 to go.

Scottie Pippen, who scored 14 points, sealed the victory with a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left that extended Houston's lead to 101-93.

Tom Gugliotta scored 22 points but managed only two after the third quarter for the Suns, who held a 77-68 lead entering the fourth period.

"The defense turned the game around in the fourth quarter," added Tomjanovich. "I thought we could score on them but we tightened the screws and made some stops. Charles was a big part of that as well. Somehow, we found a way to pull it out."

Gugliotta also had the misfortune of guarding Barkley for most of the night.

"He made tough shots," Gugliotta said. "I couldn't play better defense on him, but he's been doing that for a long time. It was unfortunate that it got to that point because we let them off the hook."

Hakeem Olajuwon had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who have won three in a row.

"It would have been terrible to lose this one at home," said Olajuwon. "Charles stepped up for us and had a really great game tonight."

Phoenix (12-13) has dropped three straight to fall below the .500 mark for the first time since ending the 1996-97 campaign at 40-42. The Suns had won six of the previous eight meetings between the teams.

After making a free throw and a layup to give Houston a 91-88 lead with 1:31 to play, Barkley missed a follow shot that could have sealed the win with 55 seconds left.

Olajuwon was called for goaltending on Phoenix's ensuing trip before Jason Kidd made 1-of-2 at the line with 18.9 seconds left to knot the score, 91-91.

The teams traded turnovers before Barkley missed a fadeaway jumper from the left corner, forcing overtime.

Cliff Robinson scored 17 points and Kidd added 14 and 15 assists for the Suns, who shot 44 percent (38-of-87) and made 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Sam Mack scored 10 points off the bench for Houston, which went on a 10-0 run to open the fourth quarter. He buried 3-of-6 from three-point range, including a 24-footer from the left sideline that capped the spurt and gave the Rockets a 78-77 lead with 8:22 left in regulation.

Danny Manning responded with a 14-foot jumper and Kidd connected on his third 3-pointer as the Suns jumped back in front, 82-78, with 7:25 remaining.

Barkley made a layup before Mack sank a technical free throw and another 3-pointer to push Houston in front, 84-82, with 4:40 left.

Houston shot 43 percent (37-of-87) and held a 51-40 advantage on the boards.
