Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Maybe the Toronto Raptors should play three games in three days more often.

Rookie Vince Carter scored 14 of his 23 points in the first quarter as the Raptors won for the first time in Chicago, holding the Bulls to just two baskets in the first quarter of a 113-90 victory.

Playing three straight games for the second time in a nine-day span, the young and energetic Raptors raced to their sixth win in seven games during that span. They went 3-0 during the first trio of games and 2-1 in this stretch.

The Raptors held an 8-6 lead with 6:21 left in the first quarter before Carter took over. He scored 12 points in a run of 19 straight points for Toronto that pushed the lead to 27-6 with 1:44 left in the period.

"The 19-0 run really stuck it to them," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "The last time we played them, we didn't have Tracy (McGrady) and Vince (Carter) was not playing really well. It gave me better matchups this time and it made a big difference."

Toronto led 31-9 after the opening quarter and held Chicago to just 10 percent (2-of-20) shooting.

Dee Brown scored 17 of his season-high 25 points in the first half for the Raptors, who led by as many as 34 points in the opening half en route to their first win in seven visits to Chicago.

"It took a lot of wind out of them," said Brown, referring to the first quarter. "They still were home where anything could happen, so we just kept putting the pressure on them. We wanted to win every quarter."

The Raptors snapped an eight-game overall losing streak to the Bulls while winning for just the third time in 14 all-time meetings.

Rusty LaRue scored a career-high 15 points for Chicago, which suffered its second-worst home loss of the season. The Bulls suffered their worst loss in four-plus seasons at the United Center earlier this month when they were beaten by 30 points by the Detroit Pistons.

"That was awful. It was one of those nights where everything they threw up went in and we couldn't buy a basket," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We couldn't finish anything around the basket early."

To make matters worse for the Bulls is that leading scorer Toni Kukoc left the game midway through the second quarter with a lower back strain and did not return. He is expected to miss the next two-to-five days. The Bulls were already without shooting guard Ron Harper, who missed the game with a hyperextended right knee.

The Raptors still led 47-24 with 6:06 left in the second quarter before hitting the Bulls with another run. Carter made a layup, fueling a 14-3 burst that gave Toronto its biggest lead of the contest at 61-27 with 3:04 to play before intermission. Doug Christie scored seven of his 13 points in the surge.

Brown had 14 points in the second quarter, helping the Raptors open a 66-39 advantage at the half.

Brown hit 9-of-16 shots, including a 7-of-12 effort from 3-point range. Carter was 9-of-19 from the floor as Toronto shot 53 percent (44-of-83), compared to just 40 percent (34-of-85) for the Bulls.

With a host of reserves playing the second half for both teams, the closest the Bulls got was 108-88 with 49 seconds left after LaRue's 3-pointer.
