Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong continued his outstanding play off the bench and received a lot of help from a pair of rookies as the Orlando Magic hung on for an 86-78 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Armstrong scored a career-high 28 points, while Matt Harpring set season highs with 16 and nine rebounds and fellow rookie Michael Doleac contributed a pair of key baskets in the final minutes.

Two days after blowing a 20-point halftime lead in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando rallied from a five-point deficit in the third quarter to improve its Eastern Conference-best home record to 13-2.

After a three-point play by Eddie Jones pulled Charlotte within 74-71 with 3:09 remaining, Doleac answered with a baseline jumper. Jones missed a layup and Harpring fed Horace Grant for a jumper, drawing a foul from David Wesley while battling for position. He hit the free throw to build a 79-71 lead.

"I know that I'm a rookie and the vets get the final shots, and that's all fine," Harpring said. "But being out there at crunch time as a rookie is just great."

Elden Campbell responded with a short hook shot before Doleac made a follow shot. Coming off a season-high 25 points against the Lakers, Doleac had nine points and five rebounds off the bench.

Armstrong scored eight points in the final period, including a decisive three-point play with 22 seconds left that gave the Magic an 83-78 lead. He added a pair of free throws in the waning moments, finishing 11-for-11 from the line.

A former member of the United States Basketball League and Global Basketball Association, Armstrong has helped lead Orlando to victory in five of its last six games. He has averaged 19.3 points and 7.2 assists over that span.

"He's the spark plug, he's the energy. We wouldn't be 19-8 without Darrell Armstrong," Grant said. "I think words would be a way of cheapening what he means to this ballclub. You really can't describe it."

Jones scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half for the Hornets, who had their season-high three-game winning streak snapped.

"We had some good looks, the ball just did not go in for us," Jones said. "There are going to be games where that ball is going to go right in the basket for us. ... So you have to take the good with the good, and the bad with the bad."

Charlotte had a chance to tie the game down the stretch. Jones and Campbell each hit a free throw before Wesley drilled his first 3-pointer of the game to cut it to 81-78 with 52 seconds to play. Bobby Phills came up with a steal but missed his 3-point attempt, and Wesley fired an air ball from beyond the arc.

Penny Hardaway grabbed the loose ball -- one of his 10 rebounds -- and pushed ahead to Armstrong. He hit a fast-break layup as he was fouled by Wesley, making the free throw for a six-point cushion.

"We had a good look, Bobby, David had a good look, they just missed the shot," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "I'll take that shot any day. Those shots go in more than they miss."

"We had our opportunity at the end there," Phills said. "We did not play our best, but we lost to a good team."

The rookies helped atone for a poor effort from veterans Nick Anderson and Isaac Austin, who combined for just seven points on 3-of-21 shooting.

"The young fellows are playing extremely well," Anderson said. "As far as Michael Doleac, Matt Harpring, I give them the thumbs up."

"I think we got some skills in the draft with these two rookies," Grant added. "They love knowledge, they're like a sponge. ... They work hard and they put it on the floor."

Trailing 40-34 at halftime, the Hornets scored the first seven points of the third quarter and took the lead on a 3-pointer by Phills. Jones fed Coleman for a three-point play and sank a foul shot to give Charlotte its largest lead, 59-54, with 1:08 left.

Orlando cut it to 59-58 by the end of the period thanks to two free throws apiece from Doleac and Armstrong. The game remained close until a 9-2 run midway through the fourth put Orlando ahead to stay. With Charlotte leading 66-65, Derek Strong and Armstrong each had a free throw to start the burst before Hardaway's 3-pointer capped it with 3:39 to go.

Hardaway contributed 13 points and Grant added 10, eight boards and five blocks for the Magic, who made just 36.5 percent (31-of-85) from the floor and 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Campbell collected 19 points and 11 rebounds and Coleman had 11 and 16 for Charlotte, which shot 38 percent (33-of-87) from the field and 4-of-16 from 3-point range.

Each team committed 18 turnovers, but the Magic managed 26 points off miscues while the Hornets had just 15.
