Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon continued his resurgence with 24 points as the Houston Rockets held on for an 88-78 victory over the Dallas Mavericks and matched a season high with their fifth straight win.

After Dallas pulled within 80-76, Olajuwon dunked and Charles Barkley added a jumper and two foul shots in a 6-0 run, helping the Rockets record their 11th straight win over the Mavericks. Barkley finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

"We got a win on the road," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We've been doing well at home. Now we're .500 (on the road) and we got to build on that."

After a lackluster 8-7 start, the Rockets have won eight of nine to pull within 2 1/2 games of first-place Utah in the Midwest Division. Olajuwon is averaging 21.9 points during that stretch. He had a season-high 32 in Monday's 110-100 victory over Sacramento.

"I just care about wins and losses," Barkley said. "I don't care about anything that happens in between. It doesn't have to be pretty. Every game's not gonna be pretty."

Houston, which improved to 7-7 on the road, also won five in a row from February 6-16 before slumping.

Rookie Cuttino Mobley contributed 16 points for the Rockets, who opened a 73-57 lead on Scottie Pippen's 3-pointer with 8:17 remaining. Dallas responded with a 19-7 run, cutting the deficit to four.

Barkley credited the play of Mobley and fellow rookie Michael Dickerson, who added eight points.

"He still drives me nuts, but he's still doing a great job," Barkley said. "I'm proud of him. He and Michael both are learning on the job. They have a great job. All I ask them is to do their best."

Shawn Bradley just missed a triple-double for Dallas with a season-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks. Hubert Davis added 18 points for the Mavericks, who have dropped five of six.

"The amazing thing was that as poorly as we played, we still got within four with three or four minutes to go," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "How that ever happened I have no idea."

"We had situations were we exploded and got open to the basket and (Bradley) was just always there," Tomjanovich added. "Finally late in the game we managed to get a couple buckets on him."

Michael Finley contributed 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Dallas, which fell a season-high 10 games under .500.

Houston shot 50 percent from the field (36-of-72) while holding the Mavericks to 36 percent (31-of-87), including just 29 percent in the opening half.

"It shouldn't have been that close, but then we were and then we found ways not to make easy shots," Nelson said.

After Dallas pulled within 14-12, Houston ended the first quarter with a 9-2 spurt to grab a 23-14 lead on Olajuwon's two foul shots with 24 seconds remaining.

The Rockets stretched their lead to 37-23 before Dallas used an 8-2 spurt to close within 39-31 at the half. But Houston took control in the second half, building its advantage to 64-51 entering the final 12 minutes.

"It's a game that you're always concerned about," Tomjanovich said. "Those guys play hard as they showed tonight. They're always in the game with their shooters."
