Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan scored 28 points as the San Antonio Spurs collected their 12th victory in 13 games and completed a home-and-home sweep of the slumping Denver Nuggets with an 86-65 victory.

"It was very important to take care of this one early," said Duncan, whose team has handed the Nuggets all three of their 20-point losses this season.

The Spurs (18-9), who posted a 112-82 blowout win Tuesday and held Denver to its lowest total in team history with a 92-61 victory on March 13, have won nine straight games in the series, dating to a 121-105 setback at McNichols Arena on March 15, 1997.

This one was no different as the Nuggets (7-20) managed just nine points in the fourth quarter in suffering their 11th loss in 13 games.

"That's it for San Antonio, thank goodness," Denver coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We got down and for some reason our defense quit. It was just a meltdown."

Antonio McDyess, who led Denver with 17 points, hit a pair of free throws to pull the Nuggets within 37-32 with 5:46 left in the second quarter before the Spurs pulled away for good by closing the half with an 18-8 run.

"I think the guys, including me, dropped their heads," said McDyess. "It could be anything, turnovers, bad defense, something -- you can't keep using immaturity as an excuse. We should know at this stage to come out and keep playing. Don't drop your heads."

Sean Elliott sparked the spurt with a three-point play and Jaren Jackson gave San Antonio a commanding 55-38 lead on a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left.

David Robinson had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs, who pulled within 2 1/2 games of idle Utah for first place in the Midwest Division.

"My role is defense and I'm doing it pretty consistently," said Robinson. "They're kind of undersized and we have tough matchups for them."

Nick Van Exel scored 16 points and Chauncey Billups added 11 for the Nuggets, who shot just 30 percent (23-of-75) from the field and committed 17 turnovers.

Duncan was 11-of-18 from the field and blocked three shots for San Antonio, which shot 44 percent (35-of-80).

Danny Fortson grabbed 16 rebounds for Denver, which held a 47-40 advantage on the boards.

"They just outplayed us, it's as simple as that," said Forston. "We went out there and played hard in the first quarter. Then we played stupid basketball."

Fortson's driving layup with 3:56 remaining in the first quarter gave Denver an early 17-6 bulge, but San Antonio responded with an 8-0 burst.

Duncan made a pair of free throws and back-to-back driving layups around a jumper by Antonio Daniels to pull the Spurs within 17-14 with 2:13 left.

Daniels scored 12 points off the bench as San Antonio reserves outscored Denver backups by a 35-10 margin.

San Antonio trailed 20-18 entering the second quarter before Jerome Kersey made an 18-footer from the left corner and Daniels sank a 14-foot jumper to put San Antonio ahead for good, 22-20, with 11:10 remaining.
