Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 27 points and the Dallas Mavericks used a pivotal third quarter to keep the Denver Nuggets winless on the road with a 98-79 victory.
The Mavericks led 57-51 with 7:55 remaining in the third quarter before closing the period with a 20-7 surge to open a 19-point advantage heading into the final 12 minutes.
Erick Strickland finished with 17 points and Hubert Davis added 12 for the Mavs, who won for only the second time in their last seven games. The victory moved Dallas one game above .500 at home (8-7).
Antonio McDyess collected 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Nuggets, who remained the league's only winless team on the road at 0-14. Denver has dropped 20 in a row away from home since a 90-89 victory at Washington on March 17, 1998.
Eric Williams added 14 points and Danny Fortson had a double-double with 11 and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have lost 12 of their last 14 games overall.
"We feel we've gotten the toughest part of our schedule out of the way," said Denver point guard Nick Van Exel. "The first couple of months is crucial, we've only played three or four teams under the .500 mark. It's been tough, it's been one of the hardest schedules since I've been in the league."
After Johnny Taylor hit a 19-foot jumper to bring the Nuggets within 57-51 at the 7:55 mark of the third, the Mavericks used some long-range shooting to exted their lead.
Steve Nash drilled a 3-pointer and Hubert Davis made consecutive shots from beyond the arc, triggering the burst to close the quarter that opened a 77-58 cushion. Strickland was a key contributor in the period with seven points.
"We had to come out and get this win tonight," he said. "The surge we had in the third quarter was big for us."
Strickland was 6-of-9 from the floor, helping the Mavericks shoot a season-best 51 percent (40-of-78). They also were 13-of-13 from the free throw line.
Denver shot only 38 percent (30-of-79) from the field.
Dallas took its biggest lead of the contest at 93-71 with 4:44 to play after Finley, who was 12-of-22 from the field, made a 21-footer jumper.
"It definitely benefits if you shoot better than 50 percent," Finley said. "Tonight we made the shots we've been missing. It was good to see that. My whole thing was to get to the basket and make the easy points and just try to get the guys involved. That seemed to open things up for us and we made the most of it."
Shawn Bradley scored all of his 10 points in the first quarter, helping the Mavs to a 26-23 lead. Strickland scored the first two baskets of the second period, fueling a 17-8 run that pushed the lead to 43-31 with 5 1/2 minutes left before intermission.
But McDyess scored 13 points in the first half and the Nuggets were able to close to 51-45 at intermission.
