Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 26 points and dished out 11 assists as the Seattle SuperSonics recorded their 11th straight home win over the lowly Los Angeles Clippers, 104-98.

Dale Ellis drilled a 3-pointer over Lamond Murray with 1:07 remaining to put the Sonics ahead for good, 100-98.

Olden Polynice received a pass from Detlef Schrempf and buried a jumper as the shot clock expired with 39 seconds left, doubling the lead to 102-98. Murray missed a 3-pointer and Schrempf made two free throws to provide the final margin.

"We obviously needed that one," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "(The Clippers) were hitting some shots -- buzzer beaters, deep ones and everything. Olden put one on them and let them know how it felt. It was a good win for us."

"(Schrempf) just saw a white jersey and it happened to be me," Polynice said. "There was not much time on the clock to think about it. I just caught it and shot."

Darrick Martin nailed a 3-pointer with 2:26 left to put Los Angeles ahead, 98-97, but that was the Clippers' final points.

Schrempf finished with a season-high 25 points and Ellis tied a season best with 20 as Seattle defeated the Clippers for the seventh straight time overall.

Michael Olowokandi collected 16 points and 13 rebounds as Los Angeles failed in its attempt to win consecutive road contests for the first time in nearly two years.

"We made a lot of plays to keep up in the game and give us a chance to win," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "Down the stretch, we made three turnovers and Dale got a killer three. We're playing good hard-nosed basketball but can't catch a break."

Payton shined in the third quarter, when he scored 12 points to help the Sonics open an 81-78 lead. His 3-pointer early in the quarter had tied the contest, 62-62.

"We take Gary for granted," Westphal said. "But he made huge plays on both ends of the floor in the second half and was the big difference."

The Sonics had a huge advantage on the free throw line, hitting 28-of-36 attempts while the Clippers converted 12-of-14. Schrempf was 11-of-14 from the line and Payton hit 9-of-11.

The Clippers shot 61 percent (11-of-18) from the floor in the first quarter and took a 26-24 lead. Rookie Tyrone Nesby and Eric Piatkowski scored five points apiece for the Clippers, while Schrempf led Seattle with nine.

Los Angeles scored eight straight points, including four by Murray, in less than two minutes to grab a 45-37 advantage with 5:38 left in the second period.

But the Sonics ended the half with a 16-9 run to pull within 54-53 at intermission. Schrempf scored six points during that spurt and finished the half with 15.

Seattle finished 2-1 on its three-game homestand and will next play five games in six days on the road, including three games in as many days beginning Sunday against Detroit.
