Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Dee Brown sank a team-record eight 3-pointers and the Toronto Raptors completed the first winning month in franchise history with a 101-91 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Brown scored a season-high 28 points, making 8-of-14 shots from behind the arc, and Doug Christie added 21 points for Toronto (15-14), which went 11-6 in March and is over the .500 mark for just the third time in its four-year history.

"I know I had a lot of 3s. I didn't know it was a team record," Brown said. "I couldn't believe I was getting that wide open. It felt good. Every time it came off my hand I thought it was going in. I was upset with the ones I missed. After hitting so many shots, you want to hit every one."

Brown has made 24 3-pointers in his last five games and his 74 on the season are three behind Miami's Tim Hardaway for the NBA lead.

"I think Dee is comfortable, obviously it means more to a shooter to have a comfort level," said Toronto coach Butch Carter. "I think his teammates appreciate what he is doing and they're trying to help him. He gets most of his 3s in transition, when the defenses just lose him."

Kevin Willis and Tracy McGrady scored 11 points apiece for the Raptors, who have won nine of their last 11 and are a half-game behind the New York Knicks for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Charles Oakley grabbed 11 rebounds as Toronto outrebounded Cleveland, 43-32.

Cedric Henderson scored 16 points and Shawn Kemp and Derek Anderson each added 15 for Cleveland, which fell a half-game behind Toronto. Kemp had just four rebounds and sat out the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers finished with one offensive rebound.

"We were beaten badly off the glass," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "We didn't have many second shots and they got us down for one offensive rebound for the game."

Brown had an immediate impact, entering the game with 5:02 left in the opening quarter and hitting a 3-pointer five seconds later to pull the Raptors within 14-11. Toronto took its first lead when Christie hit a pair of free throws for an 18-16 edge with 2:41 to go.

The Raptors took a 22-21 lead into the second quarter and built it to 34-24 when John Thomas made a layup to cap a 7-0 burst with 8:16 remaining. Alvin Williams drove for a layup to cap a 6-0 surge and give Toronto its biggest lead of the game, 51-31, with 3:42 before halftime.

Toronto outrebounded Cleveland 25-11 in the first half and took a 55-40 lead into the break.

Henderson and Anderson each scored four points in a 10-0 burst that pulled the Cavaliers within 61-52 with 7:15 left in the third quarter. McGrady answered with a dunk and two free throws and Brown hit a 3-pointer from the right sideline to push the lead to 68-52 with five minutes remaining.

Another 3-pointer by Brown built the advantage to 79-59 with 51 seconds left.
