Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Bison Dele and Christian Laettner combined for nine points in a first-quarter run as the Detroit Pistons ran their winning streak to five games with an 87-72 romp over the Boston Celtics.

Dele scored 14 points and Laettner nine for the Pistons, who used an 11-4 spurt to take a 25-15 lead after the first quarter. Lindsey Hunter scored 17 points and Grant Hill added 16 and 11 rebounds for Detroit, which has won seven of its last eight overall. The Pistons won a season-high six consecutive games from February 23-March 4.

Detroit had no problems with Boston's full-court pressure, committing just 12 turnovers. The Pistons forced 18 Celtics miscues, resulting in 25 points. Jud Buechler also had nine points as Detroit won for the fourth time in the last five games between the teams.

"We always seem to work real hard against Boston's pressure," said Hunter, who had six assists without a turnover. "If we take our time getting the ball down the court and getting things set, we seem to find open guys."

Antoine Walker, again booed repeatedly every time he touched the ball by Celtics fans, finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-15 shooting.

"We're used to the crowd booing now," said Walker. "We know their frustration, we know we've lost four straight at home. For whatever reason, we're not executing. It seems real hard to hear the plays being called out there. Kenny (Anderson) calls one thing, the coaches are yelling out another. We seem a little confused. We've got to reset ourselves."

Rookie Paul Pierce scored 20 points for Boston, which has lost four straight at home for the first time since a six-game skid from March 19-April 6, 1997.

"It's hard to believe this effort after what happened last night," said Pierce, referring to Tuesday's 109-99 win at Charlotte. "We seemed to accomplish so much and lost it all in one night."

Boston took its only lead of the game at 4-2 on Anderson's layup 2:35 into the contest. Dele had a dunk before lay-ins by Hunter and Don Reid gave the Pistons an 8-4 lead with 8:19 left.

Anderson sank two free throws at the 5:03 mark to draw Boston within 14-11, but Dele's 13-footer triggered the game-breaking run. He added a hook shot before Reid sank two free throws to extend the lead to 20-11 with three minutes to go.

Walker had two baskets around a 16-footer by Laettner, who completed the scoring in the quarter with three free throws in the final 48 seconds. The Celtics went 2-of-6 and committed three turnovers in the final 4:36 of the first quarter.

"The first quarter tonight was very important to us, we emphasized getting off to a good start," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "Forcing them into seven turnovers in that opening quarter set the tone. We controlled the tempo tonight."

Ron Mercer pulled Boston within 38-31 on a 22-footer with 2:32 left in the first half, but Hunter countered with a layup and 3-pointer to rebuild the lead to 12 with 15 seconds to go.

The Pistons took their largest lead at 54-38 on a 14-footer by Hill, who was 4-of-11 from the field. Boston came no closer than eight points in the fourth quarter.

"Tonight was a real disappointing effort, especially after how we played the last three games," said Celtics coach Rick Pitino. "We seemed to miss a lot of easy layups in the first quarter. I thought the effort was OK, but when we miss shots, there has to be a common denominator, and that common denominator is defense. That's where we're breaking down."

Joe Dumars, activated from the injured list after missing five games with a strained left calf, returned to the starting lineup and had nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. He went 1-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Detroit shot 44 percent (30-of-68) from the field and Buechler hit 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range.

Boston hit just 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, including 4-of-11 from beyond the arc. Pierce was 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 8-of-13 overall.
